Why King Abandoned the (lon
test.
Hon Owen King lias abandoned his
contest against Mr. Hazleton. The
r* ason of this is because of an error
of 100 votes in this comity in favor of
Mr. Hazleton, made by the canvassers:
his majority in this county being USS
instead of 685, and Ids majority in the
district 11)2. instead of W. Mr. King
thinks lie could overcome 112, but not
lii2, and don’t want llieolllco unless ho
can prove be is entitled to it. Mr.
King's honorable conduct during Hie
whole of the late contest has been
hiicli ns to command (lie admiration
of all friends of the cause, and even
that of bis political enemies. We are
gratified to know that we bad given
such a man our strange,-1 support.

Mr. King discovered (ho error m
the count while easting up the vote
of the several towns in (Irani
fOUoty. Mr. King’s action in the
matter is highly commendable, and
indeed Ids whole course from the
beginning to the end of the earn*
paign lias been upright and honor
able. The Dkmoouat never did,
nor does not now, lake any slock
in the extreme financial views held
by Mr. King. Eeft without a can
didate of its own choice, this paper
chose rather to advocate the election
of I lon. Owen K ing, whose integrity
lias never been called in (jiiestion,
and whose lapse from the democratic
faith we believed would only he
temporary, rather than to support a
man whose private and public rec
ord is far from being above reproach,
and who represents the worst ele
ment of the Republican party.
Having supported Mr. King, it is
a gratification to know that lie has
proved worthy of the confidence
reposed in him.
