THE DEMOCRAT Mineral Point, Friday, May 0,1870. Qeo. Crawford, Robt. M. Crawford, BDITOItS AND I’IIOPUILTORS. Springfield Register: The under lying theory of the so-called Repub lican party is, that the people of tho United States are incapable of maintaining peaceful, orderly, law ful government among themselves, and, therefore, it is necessary that they should be subjected to. the supervisory protective care of an authority not subject to their direct influence or control. Tho Russian government is mak ing an average of four thousand arrests a day of persons charged with nihilism. At this rate it is only a question of time when the last of tho conspirators will tie in prison, and tho emperor can walk Out without fear of assassination from his wife and children, as these will probably be all the people that Will bo loft,—Reek. The committee appointed to in vestigate the charges of fraud made against tho fit. Diuis philanthropists who nobly steeped forward to re ceive and distribute tho money ■or.t to help emigrating negroes on to Kansas, has nit yet reported. Consequently tiro donors are still waiting for information as to what the philanthropists aforesaid have done with V.ieir contribution:. As ferns heard from $101)0 had been tocle /cd rail only iSJCrt had been distiihute 1 among tho n, groan. Doubt! ws the philanthropists have put lio h Jin.co where it will io the must good —where neither the im provkuul emigrant nor tho cver credulo .s cul lotibers will !*o able to got at it. At present that is the prevailing belief, which can only be changed by the report of the invis tigators. Detroit Free Press: The Kxecu livo if lio had boon perfectly honest, would have simply announce to the House Ihat Ilf Vetoed tilt) bill be cause tins Republicans in Congress had made snob a terrible hullabaloo over it ihat bn dared not do other wise, The fact that bn ban debited the lloiiHo with a naiHH of words will not concnnl this knowledge from the Mourn*; nor will the fiiet that bn him choHed to inlinnite, in almost ho many words, that be will veto the I legislative Appropriation bill, no matter how salutary it may be, if il contain what be know as “riders,” heighten the respect which Congress will feel for his veto of the Army bill. Do Van llenlly Want a Strong Movernnienl { New York San. The common answer b> the in quiry, Why are you in favor of (ien. (Irani. ? is, We want a strong gov eminent. Now, is it worth while to ponder Somewhat over this proposition, and consider whether a strong gov ernment is really desirable. What is a strong government? People in this country who mention it so cavalierly labor under the mistake that il is a government strong to protect its citizens in their lights. Practically, such is seldom, if ever, the ease. A strong government is strong to oppress, So far ns protection is concerned, it is only strong to pn>* tod itself by the oppression of others. In speaking of Men. (Irani as a man who, if re-elected, would give the boiled States a strong govern ment, what is meant ? Il is meant that lie would make an administration strong for the negroes at (he expense ofthe whites; strong for the carpet-bagger at the expense of the substantial and per manent resident;an administration Strung in the cohesive power of public plunder. It would certainly he an admin istration of a strong odor; for it would smell of Babcock and Robe son and the Whiskey Ring. It would be an admimistration strong in military support and des potic tendencies. Strong governments make them selves strong at the cost ofthe blood and the liberties of the people. A strung government, would be out of place in the United States. The Reason for Re-clectlmr Grant. New York Sun. There in no more reason for re electing Grant now than there was when hi* second term expired, except that he has been treated with much attention by certain foreign potentates. And is that a lesson why the Amercan people should elect him president a third time? The crowned heads of the Old, World would like togivc usak ing. Is that any reason why we should accept a king? The American people will choose their own president without foreign dictation or foreign influence, and the instinct of freedom will prompt them to elect some man other than Grant. New Haven Register: The Dem ocratic parly of the present day, fol lowing in the footsteps of the Dem ocratic-Republican party of Jeffer son, propose to wipe from the stat ute Isstk the present centralizing laws, just as the “alien and sedition” laws were blotted out in the olden time. That a similar success will crown their efforts in the impend ing struggle cannot be doubted. Congress will carefully, calmly and deliberately consider the question forced upon it by Mr. Hayes. Pru dence, moderation and unflinching firmness in support of the right will characterize its action. Hayes will he compelled to plant his feet squarely upon the slippery ground of Federal centralization. He will ho forced to say plainly and with out evasion that he and the Repub lican parly propose to manipulate State elections hy the employment if Federal soldiers, under the flimsy pretence f “keeping the peace.” Having once squarely taken that position, Hayes and the Republican party will be swallowed up in the angry waves of a Red Men of popu lar indignation. Sale of (he Plat ter I lie Narrow Mange. Oalnim (iazulte, > The Malena and Southron Wis consin railroad was sold to the high est bidder at the front door of the court house last Saturday morning, by Daniel S. Harris, special com missioner appointed by the court to make such sale. The property was bid in by .lames S. Ryan, of (be purchasing committee, in behalf of the company, for the sum of $2,000 and includes the narrow gauge road between this city and I’lalteville; the exlens'on thereof, and all the tenements and appurtenances there to belonging or in any way apper taining. The purchasing eommit- I selected by the bondholders to represent (heir interest at the sale, were Messrs..!. M. Ryan, Win. Dick son and John 11. Heilman. There was only one hid offered on the pro perly that of Mr. Ryan and tins being the ease, it was knocked down to the bondholders. The sale was made in pursuance of a decree en tered by the circuit court in March last, and was attended by a very large number of stock and bond holders of the road. The real ami personal effects of the M. and S. W, R. R, company have now passed out of the hands ofthe stockholders into those of the bondholders, who, it is hoyed, will repair the road and complete the extension at the earliest practical moment.
