THUKSDAV, NOV., 20, 1513, EE UP-TO-DATE A Lovington dry goods com pany is advertising white buck Bkin slippers in the last issue of the Lovington paper and they go so far as to guarantee that they will be cool and nice. We are willing to take their word for it without going through the ordeal. This same company states that they have a lot of nice lawns that will make nice cool dresses for the cominur season. Now we are satisfied that the women will agree with them without looking over their stock of merchandise Paducah Post. This is a common occurance in a number of the smaller week lies that come to our exchange table. It is this kind of busi ness methods on the part of the newspaper man that causes a great manv business men to lose interest in their advertising and decide that it is money thrown i Hit High Cost of Living a Slap' BY USING ftiTNAltf ' FADELESS DYES. Newspaper men should look after the ads that; run in their paper as closely as if they were his own. Every time he runs an ad out of date its a blow to his own business and does the merchant no good. ' The advertising that pays is ihe kind that is kept right up-to-. date and put up in good shape. : The ads in the Avalanche are all . alive and the peoples names signed to them expect results from each ad and they are sel- dom dissapointed. I THANK YOU j It is in the home with those we love best we fail to say "thank you." The wife scarce ly thinks to speak the simple words when her husband re stores to her the handkerchief she has dropped or rises and ; gives her the! cy chair which he has occupied until her en trance. And how sadly often does the young girl forget to ex press gratitude for a numberless little things the patient mother does for her. It is taken fr granted that mother shall neatly mend the ripped glove or sew the missing button on the shoe, or put the ruching in the neck of the daughter's gown. The girl does not say "she is here to ilo these things," but her actions speak louder than words. In the depths of her heart, the most loyal mother must some times miss and long for the speech of affectionate thanks. Many of the amenities of life become matters of habit. Would it not be well for us in our homes to cultivate the habit of saying "thank you." In one Missouri town the marshal has instructed bis aides to shoot the tires of speeding a ltomobiles. That should be an tractive remedy, but what about th-innocent by-standers? dim MIDiWIII ALARM Hrmrt tnulf waa awaken from a Wnf 17 'rie ringing of hitWiyrien bell. TfXAS MAKE FARM ATTRACTIVE It is all very well to talk about the nobility of agriculture and the joys of freedom of farm life, but the thing that drivel the boys and girls away from the farm is the very lack of the nobility and of joys on the part of the average farmer! No boy, or girl, either, is going to admit that farm life is full of pleasures and attraction so long as the farm home is simply a roof to cover thi'ir hends. It is too often the case that the entire family on a.farm spend the indoor por tion of their lives in the kitchen, heating only bv the cook stove and lighted by one small lamp. Too often there is little or no reading matter beyond the week ly paper and the almanac. These things may be excusable in case of a young married couple who have their way to make from the very start, but any farmer who has lived to rear a family of children until they are half grown is a failure if he does not provide better home attraction. r i i The Palace Barber Shop IJKOWN & lAVNIi. Billboards, signs and circular letters demand a heavy toll, but the merchant realizes that the press delivers the goods and he seldom dabbles in ; to any other form of advertising. The local paper is the best ve hicle of exploitation, for it reaches a treat number of people. Every intelligent person reads the paper, but lot of people do not see the bili . board, nor does a busy person have time to wade through a circular letter. A firm that dm-a a national business may afford to ! patronize the billboard and the circular letter, but the merchant j who depends upon local trade must do his advertising at home where he can reach his custom ers and keep them informed ; about prices and styles. The merchants whose ads ap . pear in this paper realize the value of a good publicity medium and our readers will profit by the suggestions they offer. W. Holt Harris. LEAVE VOl'K WINDOWS OPEN Freh air is the first requisite to good circulation and pure blood, and these are essential to good health. The season for window closing is approaching, and the question of out-door sleeping should again tie brought to mind, as it is no superfluous fad but a hard-shell necessity. While it is true that the people on the farms almost have a "corner" on fresh air, it is still imperative that during the winter months they give due consideration to the ventilation of their sleeping rooms. Leave the windows und doors of your bed room open at night in winter us well as in the summer and reap the reward of a system strong enough to combat ills that are so prevalent during the winter months. . aaama iii a.ai M0 imdi ?oai No B!inef InAdeanoa I Natiafaoe I (ton Uaat IJ alttd- A' Lo weal Nat J Factory fr Prleae- T Katittl ik II 1 ....... .t nr irect .'r-oceavje !T hip ym "' Rlar'k Plnno f..r o i h r r'f&'Ti jii All auk Ik ihut piano l-ir x nnvin . hi iTa'i "I iiiht him iweeii-T irnrjrn nil niau .mim in ' vrry w fnitlii v. vou ttw-.ii lH-n' im noi-riv in urim n rn he ririRlit 1Ti ai. i.0 1 1 at blaick 1'lano .1 V paie.
