1 'that the grand jnry dada found 27 indict their last term, nine onies ana eijruteen misae- meanors. The grand jury found 12 in dictments at Silverton. Two felonies and tea misdemeanors. All this does not show an in crease in crime but an awaken ing among the people to the fact that unless smaller offenses are punished, greater ones will be committed. The time is here when grand juries can no longer afford to overlook poker play ing, crap shooting, etc. among the boys, as they did a few years ago. The fact has been brought home to thinking men that if petty offenses are virtu ally winked at by law abiding citizens, a contempt for all law is engendered in the minds of many of the youthful members of society that leads ithem to commit lirst small offenses then graver ones until some good christian father and mother will be called on to defend a loved, but untrained son for worse than poker playing. Last Saturday morning broke dull and grey with leaden clouds, a cold north wind blew in the Hereford boys to play ball withhe Canyon City Coy ottes, The Hereford boys were a motley crew as to clothes, but a jolly, smiling lot as to faces. They were out for a good time and we hope they had it; but my, how they can play! They scared the Coyottes clean off the earth with only a few small boys to root for them, and worst of all won the sweetest smiles of some of the coyottes lawful rooters. To describe the vari ous costumes of the Hereford Howlers is beyond us; but they were some. One lovely youth with flowing locks, wore a striped sweater with baby blue inex pressibles. He was nearly as cute as the dreamy eyed one who was all in red. Anyway, they can play ball and the Coy ottes did not. Following is a list of the Hereford boys: Manager McClothlin Catcher Luther Lipscomb Pitcher John Boyd First base Mart McCracken Second base Herman Beach Third base James Bell Short stop Chas.
