7 ' J STAY A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER DEVOTED TO STOOK-FARMING. CANYON CITY, TEXAS, THURSDAY. FEBRUARY, 13, 1902. NO. 46 VOL V. February 25, 26 and 27 should be on every Hereford man's cal endar in red figures, for these are the dates on which Gudgell & Simpson, Scott & March, O. Harris, Steward & Hutcheon, C. A. Stannard, Frank Rockefeller, Walter B. Waddell and Mrs. C. S. Cross announce that they will sell at Kansas City "the best 200 head of registered Herefords to be sold during the year" When breeders as conservative as are the ones interested in this sale make an assertion of that kind it is pretty sate to bank upon it. Such being the case the 200 head that will be sold will afford anyone who can buy Herefords the very best possible chance for doing so? It is good cattle, and good cattle only, that a Hereford breeder should buy. There is material in this sale that will im prove any herd in the country, and the beginner who takes ad vantage of an occasion of this kind to purchase his foundation stock has two-thiids of the battle won. This is the annual sale . in which each of the contributors It ads forth the best of his cat tle and says to the public: "There they are. That is the best I can do." Each contributor is offering the best results of his work as a breeder. The cattle to be sold have not been purchased for speculative purposes, but are the best specimens that these eiirht breeding establishments with their large annual increase can put out. It is doubtlul if any other sale with a like number of cattle involved has contained so few bred by others than the con tributors. The consignors are not using their names and reputa tions to sell cattle of any other breeding than the kind upon which their names and reputations have been built. And there will be plenty of them. One hundred and twenty females and eighty bulls from a larger offering than is usual, and coming as this does after the numerous sales of the past six months no sensational prices are anticipated. In fact, the conditions are such that is highly probable that tbe buyers present will be able to pick up a great many plums at less than they could be pur chased for privately. All females old enough have been bred to the various herd bulls of their owner, and this includes the ma jority of the females in the sale. Such great sires as Dandy Rex, Java, Benjamin Wilton, Columbus 17th, Wild Tom, Keep On, Militant and numerous others of the same high merit have been used, and the value of calves from these grand females by such bulls cannot be over-estimated. The bulls to be sold are of the breeding and individuality that can be used to advantage in every pure bred herd in the country. The bull contingent is full of "herd headers" but the large number to be sold eighty maket it extremely likely that many of them will go at farmers' prices. Don't miss this sale. This did not occur in Canyon City but from what we can learn it might well have done so. Joe Garrison sold nine lots north of the Baptist church to C. E. Long for Mr. T. J. Harvey last week. Worth, at $23. This is an exceptionally good lot of steers, and the price shows there will not likely be any decline over last vear's prices. Mr. Sheldon will receive the cattle in the spring and ship them to Mon tana. Quanah Observor. , ManncrH iu the Street.
