There was a larguly attended a nd very enthusiastic meeting of the club at the court house yesterday afternoon, at which the way was blazed toward the correct organi zation necessary to successful ac complisnment of the ambitious plans. Will Boyce, President, presided over the session, and Secretary Thomas Currie served as recorder, reading clerk and secretary. He reported the applications of Messrs. W. N. Thompson, A. G. Stanley, B. T. Ware, S. J.' Slade, A. E. Harp (of Plainview), L. B. Russell Jr., S. D. Cross and Chas. Mayer, and all of tne gentlemen were voted in as members in due form. What was even more to the point, he reported that he had col lected $4,400 of the first payment 01 stock, and after the charter fee and franchise tax was paid, amount ing to $21, the first payment on land, amounting to $2100 had been paid, 50 that the title in the land now rests in the club, subject, of course, to the completion of the contract already entered into. Out of the original ninety-three signing the roll, eighty-seven have produced the apples, and upon mo tion, the remainder were allowed ten days additional time in which to pay up, it not being desired to be hard on any one, and to give those temporarily out of the city, a chance to get right. The club, sitting as a committee of the whole, the matter of the draft of the by-laws submitted by th9 committee appointed for that purpose, was then taken up, and this occupied the attention of the body for the remainder of the afternoon. The membership of the club, as it stood at the time of adjourment yesterday was as follows: T. F. Turner, Thomas Currie, Will Boyce, Felix S. Franklin, M. W. Cunningham, D. W. Owen, R. L. It aids in making you financially independent. Pocket change does not disappearso rapidly, and the many ways of spending your income to so little advantage will be forgotten as a solid, substantial bank account grows, and a "nest egg" accumulates, to be ready when a bus iness or other emergency demands it. Lodge of Eaglei. The matter of the organization of an eyrie or lodge of the order of Eagles is being brought up again and itis more than likely that some thing will come of it in this in stance, Amarillo is the largest town in the southwest without a lodge of this popular liberal order, and the organizers of the frater nity have had their eyes upon it for quite a long time. Quality Talk On Cigars. We differ from most cigar manu facturers in portioning our adver tising. We give most of it to The Smoker by putting Quality In the cigar in place of on bill boards and other expensive advertising, and we are winning The Smoker by so doing. They appreciate Quality In The Cigar In preference to read ing about it. That's why our Elk and Panhandle cigars are leaders. Exalted Ruler Entertains Friends Splendidly at Elk Lodge Rooms. A large number of the Klks and their friends met at the lodge room last night in response to an invita tion of the newly elected Exalted Ruler, J. R. Bowman. An expert pianist had been employed for the occasion, and the terpsichorean art was endulged in until the conven tional time for departing. At 1 1 o clock a significant hour in Elk dora Dr. L. E. Magnenat, in a few well chosen words, welcomed the guests in the behalf of the host of the evening, eulogized the de parted members of the order and the mothers who bore them. After tin' tolling of the bell, announcing ike nth hour, during which the lights were turned off.theroom was again ablaze with light and E. R Taft, assisted by the Elks present rendered the Stein Song, which made such a hit at the minstrel show re cently given by the Elks. During the dancing which fol lowed, an elegant lunch was served in the shape of ice cream and cake, which was enjoyed by all. During the evening punch was served in the alcove of the lodge room, and the frequent visits made to it by the guests present was ample proof of its excellent quality. That Mr. Howinan is an ideal host was the verdict of all present and at the hour of parting all wished for hi 111 many happy returns of the day. For a Race Meet. Lucius Dills of Roswell, left for his home today after a couple of days spent here in the interest of the proposed Pecos Valley rac ing circuit, and effected what will most likely prove to be a satisfac tory understanding for a race meet ing in this city to take the last date of the series, held along the southern branch of the Santa Fe. More complete decision will be reached in the matter later on and the dates will be announced to the public. Mr. Dills, who is city en gineer at Roswell, and one of the best known newspaper men in the southwest, enjoyed his visit very much and was surprised in the change that has taken place in the Panhandle since he lived at Tas cosa, some twenty odd years ago, when he was prosecuting attorney.
