Not quito a year ago wo began the Vllth volume of the Free Press by enlarging it to almost double i'a for mer size, and about three times its for mer amount of reading matter. We now have tbe pleasure of call ing the attention of our patrons and friends to Borne other important im provements. By inspection of our present issue it will be seen : 1. That we no longer allow any ad vertisements save on the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th pages ; and that thereby we are enabled to give our readers about Til REE COLUMNS MORE READING MAT TER than we have heretofore done. All the local news, borne selections, and other home matters, as well as advertisements, will be found on said pages. 2. That the matter on the other four pages will comprise a compila tion of texas news, and more other matter of interest to Texas readers than formerly ; and that all tbe news matter contained on said pages will be found LATER AND FRESHER. These are important changes for the better ; in view of which we trust the friends of the Free Tress will be prompt in renewing their subscrip tions, and also in tbeir efforts to ex t;nl its list of paying subscribers We hope thereby to be able to gratify our ambition to make the paper sec ond to no other local piper ia the i'tate. Botu tbe candidates for Congress in this District will now asile aa ac tive eaavatt till the eleclioa. WANIIMUTOft I.KTI'KM. Wahiiington. D. Q.A Oct. 17. 1B78. J It is already nai l that the Republi can beads of Departments will make estimates smaller than any made aince the war. The Demoorats should insist that the expenditures in every nnnrtnint ha do larcer than are absolutely necessary, no matter what the i-Btimates may be. There can De .m vino-nf 50.000.000. in the next fiscal year, without interfering in any way with the efficient working ot any Department of the Government. Snoakina of the "Third Party," the other day, Senator Thurman thus happily sketched the political situtt tion. "It contains many good men, and not a few miseuided men. The idea that it can absorb tho Democratic party, or the Republican party, or draw enouuh from them both to be come tbe dominant party, is fallacious. In a eountry of free institutions there never has been, and there never wil) be. but two treat permanent parties, the one a party of privileges created bv law. and the other a party ot equal rights. In our country the party of equal rights is the Democratic party. The party of privileges, created by law, has ever been, and vet is, the party ap posed to Democracy. I exclude from the comparison tbe slavery ot the blacks that existed, not only in the South but in the North. - That was forced upon us by our English an cestors aeainBt the earnest protest of our forefathers. Exoludingthat.'what statute was ever passed by a Demo eratio Congress or a Democratic- Leg islatuse to confer spt-oial privileges upon Democrats? Not one. But on the other hand, every publio debt law, every banking law, every tariff law, ev ery subsidy law, has conferred immense privileges upon our appononts. Sir. tho Democratic party is tho natural party of free institutions. It is indestructi ble so long as such institutions ex ist." I am told that the following are the figures of the best informed straight Republicans in Massachusetts on the result ot the coming election in that Stite: Talbot, 118.000, Butler 115, 000, Abbott, 10,000, Miner, Prohibi tion. 5.000. These figures come in such a way that I believe they show what the Republicans expect. The reader will note how small the roar gin given themselves is, and most of us will be apt to believe, if this is a Republican estimate, that Butler still has chances. hex, i Reported for the Fail Pitiaa.
