Northeraft k Donalaoo, We war politely shown through tbe building by the jailor, Mr. J, W. Denforth, and as a whole we were very favorably iuipresaed with it as a great Im provement on the old one, Tbe general plan and appointments are good, and ap peared to as to have been well carried out There are soma quite manifest dofeoU, however, one of which U the placing of part of the Jailor's residence 10 the 'wind ward' of two of the oeUs so as to vitiate the southern breese. Another, and maoh mora serious one ia placing the main part of the lattice work of the iron cage la which the great body of the prisoners are confined on the wrong side, via 1 oa the north instead of the south a very bid error In this country, and ju4 bow it could bare been made we are at a loss to audarstand. Aa intelligent white inmate expressed his conviction that they wbre much mora comfortable ia the now jail than in the old, though be criticised the arrangment of the banks as In bis opinion bad. A kitchen for the jailor waa overlooked in the plan, but that oaa be readily added. Tbe cells we are told would accomodate 25 priaioners, and there are besides two extra ones for the temporary confinement of insane prisoners, which 'may sometimes be used for other prisoners. Altogether it would appear sufficient to meet tbe present wonts of the couuty. Tbe work was com pleted in advance of the time stipulated, and !he contractors are entitled to much credit for their energy and the general char. acter and fitness of their work. The present jailor, Mr. Danforth, and his assiutant Mr. Frank Ubauion are faith ful officers, and as considerate aa they are permitted to be of the comfort and feel ings of the inmates. THE NEW BBIDOE. We also visited as the work next in impor tance. We found it in a good state of pro gress. Ur. Uwens, tne contractor, miormea us that he expected to have it so that wagons ciuld cross the present week. It appears to to be a very substantial structure. The ce dar piles we were Informed were driven from eight to twelve feet in the ground. Tbe other timbers which come in contact with the water are of cypress, and are secured to the pilea by iron fastenings. The bridge when completed will be found a great ad vantage, especially since the rjver has be come so much higher than formerly. An other at or in the direction of Cheatham's Ford would be found not less useful, and we are glad to hear that the building of it is under consideration by our authorities. Last but not least we inspected tbe re cent work of Mr. Street Commissioner Ivey, m'kie's lane, including the hill this side of Cheatham s Ford. All said work has been well done, aud the rond can scarcely ever get in so bad a state again as it has receutly been. Tbe hill at the ford has been digged down con siderably, and a drain has been made the whole length of the lane. Mr. Ivey de serves credit for the skill and thoroughness with which he has accomplished these do- sireuble ends. Son Marcos is badly infested with boot blacks and fruit-peddling urohins. They are inclined to become a nuisance. Tbe best place one can find during this sort of weather is the cool depths of the San Marcos. Ma." Jones, of tho Mill Co., reports the temperature of the river at the dam at 74 0 j at its souroe 69 0 . It has heretofore been thought much colder. The "dry time" has caused a higher ap preciation of the blessing of our water works, and nearly all our people who have the chance are "taking.; The San Marcos Natatorium, of Messrs. .TnnK nt.rom. situated lust below tne dam near the head of- tbe river, is as nice and comfortable as could be desired. It has dressing rooms for ladies, and is "tip top" in all respects. The pamphlet announcement of Mrs. Andrews' School, "Science Hall Home In stitute," has just been issued from the Fbeb Pbess office in an edition of 1000 copies, and is conceded by all to be a good sample of neat and handsome printing. Thick ia we believe no pay attached to the office of School Trustee, and of coarse, the position is not likely to be much sought after. We should like, bowever, to see moie than one ticket in the field, so that the voters mav have a chance to express their preferences. The election is to come off on Seturdav. so that whatever is to" be done will have to be done quickly. Maa. Beacobakp, president for this state of the National Woman's Christian Temper ene Union, visited our town and call ed meetings at the Baptist church night for the purpose of explaining her mis sion and organizing a Union at this place. There WM fir attendance on Tuesday night whon she delivered an interesting and instructive lecture, and some twenty names were enrolled as members. The meeting proceeded to organise a Unioo, with tbe fol lowine officers: President Mrs. A. C. Mosber : Secretary, Mrs. a C. Kerr; Treas urer, Mrs. Hattie Northeraft Mrs. P. J. For me to reinaia slleut would be alike unjust to my' elf, the trustees of thia town, and the Iowa itself. Ton state that wshave literally ao Public School at all." That i not true Ur. Editor, bat on the contrary wa bar three publio ohools regularly organised under the law. with such men as E. P. Bayaolds, Ed Northcrait, Ed. J. L. Green, Dr. W. A. Jackman, D. 8. Combs, B. Dailey, and Wm. Giesen to manage and control them as com pletaly as the trustees had to control tbe school before it was in the hands of Dr. Smith. These trustees this year, gave us a free school term of four months, at a cost of 93.40 per pupil, and one school, the Iusti tote 4 months and five days absolutely free. And air, are you borne out by the facta when yon state that the Interests of the Free School pupils were made subordinate to the Interekt of the private pupils. Did yon ever make a personal observation of the mailer, go in person to the school and see j If not who was your informant, and waa be or she a person who bad opportunities to to know of what tbey spoke, or was It some one who never honored the school with their presence? The facta are that we have 807 pupils registered in the three schools, and when the the free school term began the Iustitute bad an accession of 18 pupils and the popular and accomplished Miss Nora Franklin was employed to assist in the school in oonseqnenoe of the addition to the school, when tha free school term was out there were fonr pupils that discon tinued. Mrs Duncan had an accession of six when the free term opened, and three discontinued at tbe close of the term. Prof. Richardson had three accessions at the be ginning of the term and none to discontin ue when the term closed. As to the attend ance Richardson had his entire enrollment Mrs. Duncan, within three of her enroll ment, and the Institute within 17 of Its en rollment, as good a showing, I dare say, as any town in Texas. Now as to the oonduct of the trustees in employing the parties that they did to teach these publio schools. Tbe parents of the children are not complaining, neither can they, because these men have employed the same teachers that they themselves employ, and at a much less amount per pu pil than the patron pays the same teachers. Nor do I believe that those who have the educational interest of this town at heart will complain, I have never heard a word of complaint from but three persons in this town about free schools, and you Mr. Editor are one of them. . As stated before tbe teachers employed by these trustees are the identical teachers employed by the fathers of the children and every one of them, principal and assist ants hold first grade certificates, and it seems to me to be tbe height of folly to say that professional teachers located here, who have their reputations to sustain, who are using every energy of their nature to estab-J Huh themselves in their professions aud build up a school for themselves that they and the country inoy be proud of, should negleot the children because the State was paying the tuition instead of the parent I would like to give a detailed account of of tbe free schools from the time Dr. Smith had charge of them, as you seem to be sat isfied with the arrangement when he had charge ; but it would take too much time and space; but will say that we have never had less than four months of Free 8chool, and some years more, and that too at an average cost of less than $1.25 per pupil per month.
