Wo con fens wo hats been somewhat dis appointed and aabsruoj at tha hitherto abortivo efforts, made In this couuty to wards being favorably repraute4 at the great exposition at New Orleans. MseUugs of both Indies and gentlemen bave been stayed, but soon came to nought We are ineliuea however to hope for better things from the movement now on foot, the snnounoemeut of which will be fouud iu another column. We would earnestly exhort our people to wake up tJ uiuke this last effort a flue auocess. It will be seeu that it Is not oouflued to our town, but that it is proposed to enlist the entire peo ple of the country in a oonibiued movement This is aat should be. We frequently hear people say that they do not see what our county bus to show that will be creditable to her. This is a short-sighted view. For the partial en. lighteuinent of this class, we beg to refer them tc au article in another column from Commissioner Elliott, which sets forth in some detail the various exhibits which may be made. We need not say that various additions might be mode, so for as our oouuty is concerned. Railroad to Lullng. This is a sub j oct which we have beard spoken of for some time, and meant to have said something in regard to it ere this. Now we need uot do morn than refer to the proceedings of the meeting in another oolumn. The project looks to be feasible, and its execution would certainly be of first class Importance to our town and to the people along this route. Dowu the river they are almost unanimously for it, both sides contending for the route. We earnest ly hope to see the road put through. We taer it all baok. Soou after the issue of our lost, we received a rail from two prominent ladies, who came, they said, to assure us that we had wade a mistake in stating that the organization of the Wo man's Christian Temperance Union here was about to be a failure. They Btated that on the contrary it was going on, several ministers had been enlisted, and meetings been had, and that they were encouraged to go forward. We are heartily glad to be oorrecled in this case, believing such or ganization may bo made the means of much good in our town and vicinity. We are glad further to state that the ladies having asked for the nse of a column of the Free Pkehs, it is hereby placed at their service whenever they may wish to begin such a department. We feel sure they will be able to make it of interest and profit to our readers. These is or we trust will be one very im portant nse and result of the water-works, which perhaps has not been generally con sidered. They will enable people having cisterns to clean them out when needed, and thus promote greatly the health of our town. Heretofore people have hesitated about cleaning their cisterns, even when they knew it was very badly needed, lest it might not rain for six months or so. as not unfrequently happens in this country. The consequence has beeu that such cisterns have become filthy and deleterious to health. It has been a great puzzle to physicians as well as others why typhoid fevers should occur liere, as tney sometimes do. m a country so healthy as this, and with an air so dry and pure, the disease mu.it result from some local cause, and we' think it al together likely such cause might niaiuly be traced to the foul uncleaned cisterns. In all points of view the experiment is certain ly well worthy of being made. The Commissioners' Court of Guadalupe and Caldwell counties have united to build a bridge over the San Marcos river at Mar- tindale. Our (Jommissioners nave appro priateed sjftlOO for this purpose and have ap riointed one of their number to act with one from Caldwell as a committee ro further this object, ndvertise for bids, etc. We con gratulate our friends about Martindale upon this addition to their facilities for travel. Seguin Tinges. "Come to vonr quinine." This is the fa miliar old army tune that these cold nights and mornings is playing for many of our citizens. It lias been a long time since mis portion of Indiana was getting such a shak, ino up as it is now. Ague and malarial fevers are rife, and care must be taken or more dancerous types of disease will follow in their footsteps as the season advances. We clip the above from an Indiana news paper published in our part of that State, which is regarded as the healthiest. It sounds oddly to us as coming from there, and especially here in Hays county, Texas, where ague is almost unknown. The Commissioners request us to remind overseers of roads of their duty to provide sign-boards at all cross-roads and to put up mile posts on their respective roads. The Commissioners are now ex-officio supervis ors of all the roads in their districts and thev will have to report at the February term of the court all derelictions of over seers. This report goes before the grand jury for their action. "A word to ine wise should be sufficient." The alarm of fire on Friday oliiht was simply intended as a trial of the promptness of the fire company, and was creditable to tneni. We learn that Miss Fannie Howard has been tendered a position as art teacher iu Kyle Seminary. She is unusually gifted in tue artistic lino. Parson Garrett informed us tho first of the week of the death a few days since of Mr. Burditt, proprietor of the well known Hour Wells, near Luliug. At another fire at Lampasas a few days since, the loss is estimated at some f-'oO,-000. We regret to see the names of Ma- loue & Co., formerly of this place among the sufferers. L. W. Mitchell returned from the North on Saturday. He says Mr. Caldwell found Wiscousin too cool and damp, aud returned with Mr. Mitchell to the mountains of Ten nessee, where he now is Mr. Storms completed the sale of his per sonal effects on Saturday, and will leave with his family in a short time for Sing Sing, New York, where he has offers from his son-in-law to go into business. We have been apprised from Blanco that Prof W. A. Hall intended coming here this week for the purpose of gcttiug up a class in vocal music, and asked to say that he is an excellent teacher and a gentleman. P. G- Garrison has rented out his ranoh near Dripping Springs, and proposes with suitable encouragement to locate in this place iu the real estate business. See his notice elsewhere on our local page. Some people say they dont waut any more false alarms of fire that they may do for healthy men and other people, but are not favorable to the sick, weak aud nervous, and not being necessary, should be dispens ed with. Our bright little friend, Master Ashley Murchisou, presented us on Monday with some very fine peaches grown on his father's place iu town; ' 'Onderdouk's Favorite" und "Indian Queen." They were large ana de licious, demonstrating what can be done in that line by proper cultivation and attention. Miss Mary Lyons has arrived. From her delay in coming we begun to apprehend that we were to miss the usual vacation call of this admirable young lady, and are gratified to find that our fears were groundless. She is accompanied we believe by her friend, Mrs. Garwood, of Bastrop, nee Miss Nina Pfeuffer, On Saturday while Geo. VanEvery and family were going on a visit to a Mr. Jones, who resides on the Blanco, the wagon wheel ran into u deep rut, whichjfbrew Mrs. V, and baby out with great force. It was at first thought Mrs. V's arm was broken, but such was not the case however. The baby escaped unhurt. The venerable Amariah Wilson, of whom we have several times had occasion to make mention, after having lived in Indiana, Illi nois, Iowa and Missouri, went to Oregon in 1844. Was nine months crosKing the plains. Went to California in '47, and came thence to Texas. His expeiience has been similar and about as varied as that of Maj. Donal son. The young folks of our town now have some sort of a literary society. The last meeting was at Mr. Franklin's, the evening of the "fire," to which the young gentle men responded in their best evening attire, like the other young heroes to the call to the battle of Waterloo from the ball-room iu "Belgium's capital," as sung by Byron. We have noticed for some time the farmer like appearance of Dan Hofbeinz, but the reason did not occur to us till we saw him busily engaged in manual labor in his gar den, on the way to the depot. He has a splendid piece of ground, and has raised a large amount of "garden truck." We no tice he has a patch of tobacco growing among his other "vegetables." Nouh Steel, a well known colored man of this place, being desirous of hearing from his relatives, whom he supposed to be somewhere in Fairfax county, Va., at our suggestion recently had a notice inserted in the paper published at Fairfax C. H. In consequence ho informs us he has already received several letters in response to the notice. That is unquestionably the way to do business. Nothing like advertising. It is with sincere regret that we have to record a very serious accident to L. D. Jackson, the proprietor of the vegetable garden at the San Marcos Mills. Ueversl days since, while out with his market wag on, his horse took fright, and Mr. Jackson, in jumping from the wagon, dislocated an ankle and also broke one of the bones of the leg. It is a most serious hurt, vastly worse than an ordinary fracture of a limb, and will probably confine him to his room for a very long time, Mr. Jackson is a very worthy gentleman, a local Baptist preacher, as well as a faithful daily worker for the support of himself and of those d pendeut upon him. who with him are en titled to the sympathy and aid of this com munity in this their time of trial. Some weeks since Geo. Lineweber, an old settler and citizen of this vicinity, came into our office and subscribed for a copy of the Fs Paaxa to be srot to Zee Mc Danald, a nephew of bis. who had been confined ia the penitentiary at Hantaville nearly twenty year, and who was expected to be releaed ander a panloa from tb- Go, ernor. A considerable number of our oltiztns met at tbe office of Judge Fisher in this place on Friday evening last to consider the subject of a railroad to Luliug. The alaority with which our "fire boys" responded to the alarm last week, augurs well for their efficiency should they be called where their services oould be available. ' Ten minutes after the alarm-was sounded on tbe night that Fuss Wright's house was burned, the Hook & Ladder Truck was on the ground, well mauned and ready for ser vice. A member of the Hose Co., was the first white man at the fire. The false alarm on the evening of tbe 15th, has been severely denounced, and regarded as reprehensible by many, who have not thought of the purpose for which it was in tended. In so fur as the object was to find out with whut proiupti ude the members of the company would respond to an "alarm," it was significant. - Within five minutes of the first cry of fire a stream of water was pouring on the flumes, aud the boys, many of whom were in attendance at the general social gatherings in town, clad in their "Sun day best" gave no thought to their clothes but ruHhed to the front Alarms of this kind are necessary, and while they may be objected to by the nervous "old ladies", of both Hexes, they cannot be dispensed with. The recent conflagrations at San Saba, Lampasas and Greenville, should prompt our people to deal leniently with the efforts of the Fire Boys to promote and demon strate their efficiency. . . . A few words of enoonragement would be in better taste than so much censorious comment. The time may come when they will be tried, should they fail at that time no excuse should be offered and none ac cepted for their dereliction, - until then the people must bear with an occasional distur bance, if disturbance it is to call the com pany together without previous warning. Respt., ' -! i. Cboakeb. ' For The Fks Piickb, . . Who Got Mad About It I Well, one man thought the town was on fire, no he proceeded with the greai est de liberation to stick his leg through his coat sleeves. He got mad because this way of putting on one's garments is a very sane and useful idea in case of a real fire, but at the same time mnkis one feel like a fool when there is only a false alarm. Another man thinks it is all well enough to allow an excitable" citizen to tear his shirt on a picket fence aud rush barefooted through broken glass bottles; it boing a well known fact that such enthusiastic individuals with their bleeding feet and mangled night clothes, prove to be of great service in case of real fire. But to be so willing aud so well prepared for a night's struggle, to be so cool and so determined to sail right into the burning boxes oiled, goods boxes why, surely this is enough to drive one stark mad. The above gentlemen are good citizens, and have our sympathies. . But here is a man whose accident on account of the false alarm ought to put him on the track of countless wealth. This gentleman of majestio proportions, mistaking the number of jitops from tbe gallery floor to the around, took no time to count them, and consequently fell on the hard earth with such prodigious force as to tear np a place big enough for a cistern. Unless this gentleman could be induced to aid the hook and ladder department by fall ing against bouses that demand removal in case of fire he could do no great good, for if left to his own invention, be might take up the whole of his invaluable time in full ing over front yards without ever getting himself to the scene of danger. Now if this gentleman would take contracts for falling around oyer tbe country where the people want excavations for tanks and other pur poses, his fortune is made. Jmt think what the ship canal projectors would give for this gentleman's services ! Fur.
