In the parlor of tho Peabody hotel was
hold a conference between tho commis
sioners of agriculture of the various
southern states who attended tho con
vention of cotton growers on tho previous
day, regarding tho action of tho conven
tion, and they agreed on tho following
memorial:
Tho commissioners of agriculture rep
resenting tho states of Alabama, Arkan
sas, North Carolina, Georgia and Ten
nessee being impressed with tho necessity
for a reduction in tho acreago of cotton
and tho greater diversification of crops
for homo consumption, hereby indorso tho
action of tho cotton growers' and mer
chants' convention held in tho city of
Memphis, Jan. 8, 1892, and earnestly ap
peal to all agricultural and mercantile
organizations, consisting of Alliances,
Granges, state and county agricultural
societies, boards of trado, cotton ex
changes, chambers of commerce, etc.,
and also individual farmers and mer
chants, to assist and co-operato with us
in securing tho foregoing results, and to
this end recommend the general and
local adoption of tho action of tho con
vention pledging themselves to a reduc
tion of not less than 20 per cent, of tho
cotton acreage of last year, and wo fur
ther urgo and recommend tho immodiato
organization of state, county and dis
tricts or townships to act either inde
pendently or through already organized
societies, as deemed best, and to most
readily insure tho bonefits arising from
concert of action and tho decreased pro
duction of cottou for 1802.
Attempt at lynching.
St. Makys, Kan., Jan. 12. An attempt
was made Friday night by a mob of
thirty masked men to lynch Lem
Gouldsberry, the slayer of Peter Binder,
confined in tho Marshall county jail, this
place. Tho sheriff was called to tho
door of tho jail and overpowered. His
keys and revolver were found in his bed
room. Tho mob hud entered tho corri
dor when someone's revolver exploded,
and tho mob, which lacked organization
and leadership, scattered, followed by n
fusilado from the jail. No one was in
jured by tho flying bullets, but tho mob
was badly frightened and dispersed in a
panic,
