What I Know About Hardware and
Hard Times.
Tho causo of hard times is not short
crops, floods nor drouths, low price of
cotton nor scaroity. of money. It is
tho habit of the people to live beyond
their inoomo, or in the language of
political economy, consumption is
ahead of production. If the man who
earns $50 00 per month and lives
comfortably on same, is advanced to
$100.00 per month, will ho eavo hie
inoreaso? Very seldom. He will at
oncoinoreaso his coat of living. But
if tho $100 00 man is reduced to
$50.00, ho will go in dobt as long as
he has orcdit, before ho will reduco
his coat of living. Laborers who
earn $40.00 per month spend $50 -00.
Those who earn $100, spend
$150. Farmers apend their crops be
fore there is a seed in tho ground.
Merchants whoso inoomo is $1000 a
year manage to livo on $1500. Cities
wlnse income is $100,000 spend
$200,000. Railroad Co's., who earn
a million a year, spend two million.
No one seems to look out for the
"rainy day" which is euro to come
sooner or later. Theso defioits (be
tween earnings and expenses) which
appear from the lowest to tho highest
strata of society, accumulate until
credit is stretched to tho highest ten
sion. A panic is tho result. This is
tho only remedy, for nothing short
of absolute necessity will toaoh the
average citizen to live within his
in-
come. For your hardware go to
E. Straubb.

portant Facts.
Prof. Wm. Windsor the renowned
phrenologist, deliverod the first of a
series of lectures at the Philo hall last
night. The hall was crowdod with
people anxious to know how this
wonderful man can read tho character
of oaoh and evory man, woman or
child who will submit to a touch of
tho hand. Messrs. Wat,t and Duprco,
two prominent oitizens, were chosen
last night for publio examination and
tho delineation of their characters was
satisfactory. The lecture tonight and
each succeeding night will occur at
the commercial college hall over
Moore Bros., corner Mary and Fourth
streets. Tho subjeot tonight will bo,
"How to Become Rich." Tomorrow
night it will bo, "Matrimony." Tho
lectures are freo and the entertain
ment is first class.
