RATS IN A MENAGERIE.
Rodent I. iiiiui tho IMt'pliimtq mid fliuitt
tliu Illdo of tlio Itliliinrciiit.
Few of tho many peoplo who visit tho
Central Park inonngcriu know why it
fox tcrrior is to bo found in ono or otliui
of tho inclosuies in which tho elephants
aro confined. Tho majority doubtless
think thero is soinotliintr almost cruel
about it. As a fact, it is fun to tho tut
rier and a protection to tho elephant. It
is really nn exemplification of tho fable
of tho lion and tho mouse.
Theio aro no greater pests in tho mo
nagerio than tho rats. Thoso small ras
cally rodents havo found that tho feet ul
tho elephants aro excellent eating and
havo no hesitation in gnawing at them
when tho animal lies down, and, owing
to its fhained condition, is nnablo to
defend itself against its puny enemies.
This is particularly tho caso with "Tip,"
who, owing to his vilo temper and mur
derous habits, has to bo securely chained.
Tho rats in :i fow nights would make
this monster a perfect cripple wero it
not for "Gip," tho terrier, who is always
loosened at night, and woo betido the
adventurous rat that ventures out on j
quest for a tidbit of elephant too. "Tip,''
roguo though ho is, knows his good lit
tle friend and allows him to curl up on
tho uneaten hay closo besido his ponder
ous body, and when thero is a dash
across tho pen, followed by a mortal
squeal, takes no notice of it, except per
haps opening ono oyo in a lazy way, and
then, knowing that ho is s.ifo for the
night, trumpets n Small voto of thank'
to his tiny friend and gives himself uj
to undisturbed slumber unil dreams ot
Indian jungles.
Lately tho rats havo changed theii
baso of operations. It was found that
thoy wero gnawing holes in tho thick
hido of tho rhinoceros. Fanny, tin.
Scotch terrier, who really rules tho deei
house, and is ono of tho best Litters in
tho world, was brought into requisition.
Sho was locked up in tho mammal house
and her first night thero was ono of pure
joy. Fauny is a most methodical canine.
When tho houso was opened in the
morning sho had a pile of twenty-soven
rats in tho middle of tho floor and was
wagging a short tail in almost a hyster
ical manner.
After greeting her master, Phil
Holmes, she seemed to remember there
was something elso to do, and taking
ono of tho dead rats in her mouth she:
ran off to whero her litter of pups was,
just in rear of tho camel shed. Sho car
ried four thero for tho littlo ones tc
worry. Fanny has guarded the rhinoc
eros so well that not a now bito has
been seen on tho animal, but every morn
ing thero is a diminished heap of dead
rats on tho floor.
Thero aro places in the menagerie
whero tho rat is doing great damage.
In tho pigeon houso thero aro somo rart
birds, tho Moorhees pigeon from Serin
gapatam and tho American "passenger"
pigeon, which seems to havo nearly died
out with tho Buffalo. Both theso birds
breed plentifully in tho menagerie, but
as soon as tho young ones aro hatched
tho rats carry them nway. Now York

"To Milkmen and Others Bowaro ot
tho hand camera." If London roguery
wero systematically organized, some
such notice as this might bo looked for
as a result of tho disclosures mado by
Mr. Hepworth. president of tho Hplborn
Camera club, at his interesting magic
lantern demonstration. Among tho
"Loudon Street Scenes," which formed
a largo proportion of tho slides, was ono
entitled "Caught in the Act." It pro
jected on tho whito background a figure
of a man standing on a water cart pour
ing water into a largo milk can, while
hard by was a cow standing nt ease.
Tho littlo sceno was so full of oxpres
sion, as tho art critics say, that Mr.
Hepworth tells us it had been supposed

Only Twice u Passenger.
Mrs. Edward D. Jones, wife- of a for
mer well known business man of Pitts
burg, who died on Saturday, near Balti
more, was quito a character, though a
very retired und refined lady. Sho had
a mortal fear of railroads and of tho
ocean and never would accompany hex
husband on any of his pleasure or busi
trips, only taking two lengthy railroad
journeys in her lifo. One was shortly
after her marriage, when sho was badly
hurt in an acculeut.
It was ten years beforo Mr. Jones
could porsuado her to tako another, and
her fears wero fully vindicated by a
general smash up, in which, fortunately,
though her head was caught between a
seat and the side of a car, sho was not
hurt. That settled tho cars for her. Mr.
Jones has been a prominent insuranco
agent in London for years, hut Mrs.
Jones has always stoutly refused to visit
his present abode. When Mr. Jones
wanted a chat with Mrs. Jones, ho just
took tho first boat und a little trip of
8,000 milea. Pittsburg Times.
