The News received a letter last
Saturday irom a gentleman in Hol
land; Bell county, giving a report of
Gerald's speech there and a general
review of tbe situation. Tun News
did not intend to publish tho letter
for several reasons, but Mr. Blake's
unfair treatment of Tudgo Gerald
Saturday, and Mr. Pendleton's effort
to jajhHwk tho Marlin delegation,
rails tor a defense of MoLennan coun
ty's candidate and The News wishes
to be understood as being ready at all
times to fight for McLennan county
and her candidates. The letter is as
follows:
To The E kninu News:
Holland, May 13. Judc'o Gerald,
candidate for congress, to fill tho un
expired term of Mills, addressed the
citizens of Holland last night. It was
his first visit to this placo, and ho was
known only from reputation, except
to a few parties His speech was
well received and ho won the respect
of all parties He is a man of con
viotions, aggressive in thought, with
tho candor that comes of an honest
heart and intellect. His speech was
wtl put and was well roceived, and
tho Third Party men candidly admit
that he is the mo t formidable candi
date that is in tho field. He is in fa
vor of tho free coinage of silyer, and
for the purpose of increasing our cir
culation, while Lieutenant-Oovernor
Pendleton said "that tho
government had no right to inflate the
ourrenoy ot the country, but that he
was in favor of "Free Coiuane." The
lieutenant governor also said that he
did not understand the l,Silver Ques
tion." Everyone who knows tho
f.entleman will indorse tho last state
ment. Also he says the way out of
these trouble, "is to sell higher and
buy oheapcr "
It is refreshing to listen to a man
like Judge Gerald, who haB clear-cut
idoas, is brave and candid, aftei en
during the silly rot of our "razor
back" pohtioianp, who haVo fatigued
indignation and oontempt with their
utter stupidity. Tho third party men
have met our Boll county politicians
and have literally mopped tho earth
with them, and the public are con
cluding that Democracy has no de
fense to offor. It is probablo
that Bell county will instruot for
Judce Gerald, and unless tho "mug-
gies" capture the primaries it will bo
sure to do so.
For four years Bell aountyhas been
in a tuimoil and tie muggics have
beaten the regular nominees. Two
years ago liieut.-Gov Pendleton de
nounced tho nomination of tho regular
H. P Robertson as a fraud, yot
was nominated by tlio ramo convon
tiou, or indorsed by it for lieutenant
governor. Ho paid that ho would
have supported Robertson, but that his
nomination was a "fraud," and ho
lent all his prestage to defeat ltoberson;
anu Ajr i'endleton'a only hope of an
foating tho regular Dotnooraoy of
Bell county. Ho has dono more by
1 his course and expressions than any
other man in Bell county to destroy
tho organizcti machinery of the Dem
ocratic party. The Third parly hero
arc anxious that Pendleton or .Blake
will bo tho nominoo of the Democratic
nartv. thov oxr.cot to bo ablo boat
Bithor of them.
Blako's expressed views on the
J ''Financial Question," rondor his elec
tion impossible, tho Third party men
' have met and scalped Mr Pendleton
until thcro is nothing left for tho po
litioal barber but to shollao tho knots
and pnttj up the holes, and it is sus
pected that an attempt will be made at
enough of the primaries in Boll coun
tv by the Third party men to have
Boll county instruct for Pendleton,
hat is their fuht step, and if they can
have him or Blake nominated tliey ex
pect to go in ''flying."
Now tho Democratic party wou'd as
well look to it at once, that wo have a
fight on hand.
It took tho prestige of Mills to
hold thi district herotof jre, aud now
toe Third party is vastly stronger and
more alort, and it is prudence and
truth to toll the district that Pendle
ton can not command a united support
of the Democratic party in Bell oounty,
to say nothing of tho Third party
that will vote all tho Republicans
nearly to a man.
This is all plain, but when a man
conoludes that ho runs tho party, but
at tho same time is dovoured by ovtry
man that ho meets on tho rostrum, it
is time to call a halt and get a better
man.
Judgo Gerald will suit us; ho is not
a bigot, snde or a fool, and would not
disgrace his constituency. Yours,
Democrat.
Demoorat is a gcntloman with whom
Judge Gerald has no acquaintance and
who perhaps never saw Judge Gerald
until ho spoke at Holland. Tho judge
has made the samo impression every
where and The News confidently ex
pects him to get the nomination. He,
however, will not try to get it at the
expense of honesty and fairness, and
common decency. Ho will deal
candidly with tho people and treat
his opponents with respect and
gentility, coming out of tho con
vention with a clear consoienco and
utter self-respect, it matters not who
is nominated.
