CONTINUKn.J Boforo treating on "Nuisances and how to Abato Thorn," I Hskthatovery family provido themsolves with a oopy of The News for future references. It is a subject that every family should bo familiar with, viz : How to apply our kuowledgo to the healthfuhices of our homes, particular attontion should bo given to thn classification ot tho most dangerous nuisances under thoir propor heading. Impuro air; It has ofton boon pronounced wondor ful, that in tho ui03t beautiful regions of tho earth, whoro every senso is grati fied, and whero tho air wo brratho is delightfully fragrant, thero should bo contained within it tho most pornioi ous poisons, under tho influence of whioh man siokons and dies. Tho manner in whioh impuro air injuriously affoots tho system is not understood by all, though susooptiblo of the simplest explanation. Now in common with all other warm blooded animals, require that tho blood in his system should be continually exposed to fresh currants of pure air. So con stantly are tho lungs required to labor in the fulfillment of their funotion, that thoir oessation even for a few minutes, would result in asphyxia or death. By one aqtion of respiration, that tof inspiration air is oarricd into the lungs; by anothor that of expira tion impuro air is oarricd out of tho system. To illustrate, thorefore, tho pernicious influences of tho vory prevaleut evil of small or crowded apartments and inadeqaato vontila tion, it may hero bo stated that tho average respiration of a pint of air occurs about eighteen times in a minut, equaling a little over 21 cubio foet per hour, or nearly 520 oubio foet in twenty-four hours. An apaitmont 14 feet long, 13 lcet wide and 8J feet high, which aro large proportions in ordinary dwollings, would therefore, not contain air enough to supply three persons dur ing 24 hours for tho purposo of breathing, without making any allow ance for tho influenco of tho insensi bio perspiration in doteriorating tho oonfined atmosphere, or for tho faot that tho carbonio aoid gas that it con tains renders tho air exhaled from tho lungs heavier than the pure atmos phere; it must hence bo nianifost to every one, that, even where pure day air prevails, oopius ventilation is al- wajs essential; and that, in winter, when the combustion of the fuel that warms us in cooporating with our own vital organs in impoverishing tho air of its oxygen, and when the desire for tho warmth within our dwellings tempts ns to excludo tho atmosphere our danger is always greatest, Fronrwhat has thus beon stated, it is obvious that tho preservation of tho habitations of the human family from noxious and impure air is oce of tho first duties each person owes to him self and to his neighbors. Tho ro moval of everything offensive from the habitation of its proximity, is demand ed by every consideration of health, comfort, dtcenoy, and true economy, notwithstanding tho apparent apathy of tho world to this truth. Impure water There is no problem in Boicnce moro definately settled, than the one pertaining to the drink ing of impure water as a causo of entcrie disease. Pure water is of such importanoe in every house hold that it oue;bt to be tho question of questions before renting a house or solecting one; is tho witer 'supplied to their homes pure? or oan I get pure water hore. The notion that taste and smell can bo relied upon as sure indi cations of the quality of water is a dangerous error. I have seen and drank very wholesome and satisfactory water which one not aooustomed to would hesitate to taste. I have also scon wator drawn from deep wells, cool, olean and sparkling, whioh was tho means of poisoning many people; somo of them fatally, and whioh no one could drink with impunity. In 180(5 an epidemic of oholcra was oaus ed in Londou by tho use of impuro wator from wells poisoned by foul liquids permeating tbo soil; and yot wo have it on tho authority of erai. nent sanotirians and chemists, that many of these wolls "yields cool, bright and olean wator." Contami nated wator may bo tho only drink of tho milk cow and through tho channel produce and foster an epidemic of disease. If wator examined for organic mat. icr uu auoweu to stanu lor a day, a sediment will often settle to the bot tom. If a portion St this sediment be dried and burnt in a porcelain dish ovor a spirit lamp, it will smell bid, if thero is animal organio matter pres ent. It will turn black if thero is organic matter of any kind nresont. This of oourao shows organio matter in a Btnto of suBponsion in the water A vory simplo test for organio mut-1 term water consists in uissoiviug thcroin a Rmall quantity of white sugar- In a few days if sewages, wine, nllumcn or any otlior organio im purity bo present, tho wutor becomes white and milky from the development of certain funged growths. Sower Gas: Popular indifferance to tho evils resulting from defective drainago is doubtless attributable wholly to popu'ar ignoranoc. A major ity ovon of intollcgent pcoplo regard tho subjoot as one in whioh thoy havo no personal intorest, and for this reason it is ilillioultto instruct the 111 through tho medium ol tho publio prints. Those who h'tve boen en gaged in the work of sanitwy intpoo tion havo almost invariably expori oncod great diflioulty in securing ro forms, tvon of tho most dangerous evils. Tbo popular belief soeniB to bo that thure is 0 great doal moro talk about sewers gas nmongJthoBe who lay claim to soiontifio knowledge than its praotioal importance really warrants. I soarooly need assure tho reader that this is a serious mistako, which cannot fail to imporil the publio by giving riso to a falso sense of pcourity and en couraging tho toleration of dancrorouB nuisances. Tho importanoo of guarding against thu danger of sower gas poisoning Bcoms to have boon well understood by tho ancients for tho rains of anoicnt Rome show that all the sowers wero well ventilated to the end that tho puro atmosphoroair might oxidizo and destroy tho poisiona arising in the gases given off by decomposing sow ages. As a rale modern sowers arc bucindifferantly ventilated, as a con sequanoo tho gases genoratod in the sowers are rendered innoxious by di lution with enough puro air to destroy tho organio gorms whioh go with thorn, but when tho germs find thoir way into a houso tbey aro pretty sure to cause serious mischief What is sower gas?
