The man wbe wauts a home in now tbo purchaser. Hoger Q. Mills will be ro-olccted as his own successor without much opposition. Vaco is going to have, in tho near future, a beautiful purk. It will be built by private enterprise. Krupp has a big gun whieh he says will throw a shot sixteen miles. Ho is going to bring it to tho World's Fair. ARKANSAS PENITENTIARY. For a Mipniiitcndoiit if a peniten tiary to peimit lil-h to accumilato until it exudes puisoti hu deadly as to causo death onions: there held in it by the strong arm of tho law, he is guilty of a fearful crime, and publio opinion should so brand him. If the wire reports publ shed in The Nkwb for the past few days bo trno, the creature charged by the law wi'h car ing lor the couiiort aud Ht.fi ty ot the unfortunate wretches deprived by the law of their liberty, and coufined in the Little Hock penitcnt:ary, should be held up bifjie the bar of public opinion as a monster as criminal as the worst of the g..ng, for ho is a murderer The papas of tt is nation a3 a side issue aro I usy making a cabinet for Mr. Cleveland and trying in advance to deterni'ne whothcr or not Mr. Cntp will be re elected spenker. The masses of tho people care nothing about personal honors or the ambition of individuals. They voted for Mr. Cleveland becntiso he represented 1o them the needed reforms declared for in the platform of the democratic party, and they had aud still have faith in his personal and political in tegrity. Ttiey do not care who is speaker of the nixt house or who is houorcd by Mr. Cleveland with a place in bis cabinet. What they are interested in, what they expect End what they have aright to dtnimd and what thoy do d.-mand, is when the party comes into power, an immediate inauguration of tho reformations to which tho party stands pledged. It is believod tho incoming administration will not disappoiut the people. Tho Waco Natotorio-Stnitorium is doing iiiiiob to advertise this city. With his usual thoughtfulncss and consideration for the press gang, Col. Parrott has favored the editors of the state with a complimentary season ticket. They all speak of it and of tho splendid Natatoiium, and thereby advertise Waco. Tho Colonel oan al ways bo trusted to put in telling woik for tho Ceutral City. A NOTE TO THE NEWS. The contest fur the tpoakerthip cf the next house promises to bo lively Fields, Gossctt, Cochran and soveral others uro spoken of by tho press as suitable timber. They think they could hold down tbo job, and are therefore candidates. The Newp, will not acvisa the membors of the bouso how to voto for speaker. Strangers who throng tbo streets of "Waco are somotimiH heard to remsrk, the streets and sikewalks of this city might be improved. Several of the esteemed contempo raries of The News aro engaged in telling the members of tho next house who they should not elect for spoaker If the members are not qualified to select a speukcr, then God pity Toxas, when thoy approach the more impor tant matters of legislation. A Wide-Awake Business Man Coun sels Active Support to tho Papor and Telia of Its Vlrtures. Emtoh News In a community like Waco to succed, "tho good of one is the gocd of all" is the only true polioy to sucauES. I noticed and read the article from "Merchant," breathing this spirit, and we say heartily, amen to biii.1i idea no matter by whom writtiu or spoken. Stick TOaKTiiLii and freely advertiso our town aud ur business will make our town row Wo sadly n ed a univying organization an organization to take hold, to wa'ch our interest aud push our trade. What would a fine team, fine wagon or carriage, fine harness, all i quipped, withouf shafts or tongue to guide that vehicle be? Waco has fine natural advantages no bet-erin the world We may run all right on smooth road, but wo need a tongue, an organization to give direction to our ell made wheels. Look ovorour daily papers and see As you say editorially 5sterday, and si o ho many business men advertise of our me. chants, lawyers, ilootors, and other business men. Said a leauhcr to the writer when preparing himself for teacho: ''What do you tell your pupils punctuation means?4' I hCjian to explain under tho old rule of oeuntiug o.'io for a coinint, i wo for a semi oolon, ami so on. ".Stop," said tho learned teaihcr, "you havo not the first idea yourself of p .'notuaiion Do you si-e these windows in this loom? What are they foi? ' Wo promptly replied, "For light and ventilation " 'Correct, sir," said the teacher, but they aro moie for lithi ihun vuiltla lii.ii. What the windows tire to thiB ur my room, is what punctuation is to any sentence.'' Now Mr. Editor, apply this same thought to a nowsu.irier as it relates to a a town. Then apply the same thought to a busiuess How worce than mean ingless would a town be without a newspaper. How dark would and is that busines", which has no h'yht or venteluliui by the iewspajier. How mean and stlntjy must that man feel even to himself, who thinks when he has paid his subscription to Aw paper, then grunts and kicks because the papor don't thto.v him in about $5 whorth of "personal'' each week or month! What has given the Wajo Trading Co. the leading position to day, so that orders by mail and wi e oi me fioin Gatesville, Belton, Moody, Hillaboro, Cameron and many other places? We have not sent men to tho-e towns Oar bargains in Waoo aro told to some extent by our custo mers, but tho newspapers talk to tho thousands in Waco and other places. I t-ay give us moro men to say "united we stand'' and let us all pull for aco trade. I am not married to auv Det schemo. Will work with any man for the "good of all." We offer our hands to tho newspa pers of Waco, to every mcrchan', to anybody. Lot us "let in tho light." Yours truly, J. W. RitauiNs. t. F.JONES. II. M. THOMPSON. W. II, OIBSCI JONES, THOMPSON & CO.. While tho advertisments aro not so numerous as it could wish, still it has no complaint to make, The next legislature will doubtless fabmit a proposed amendment to tho oenstitution, so as to enable the slate to charter state banks of issue. Xn News yesterday contained tho startling official announcement: "The U.iD3 will no longer stop at Mount Lvnn " Hard on the dwellers of that titi. In fixing your plana for tho new year don't forget tbo poor, and don't fo'get their children. And when you irant to help tho children of tho poor, see Mrs. McDonald at the Children's Nursery. Mr. Cleveland has directly and indirectly at his d'sposal 180,000 places with more or loss fat appertain ing thereto. What a largo dish of pio, but like tho coat in the contraband song, "it won't go half around." Matters in conneolion with the building of the dam across tho Brazos are progressing favorably, it is under stood. Tho preliminary survojs have all been made, and it will not be loDg before work will begin on it. Tho city of Waco will in the noxt decado bo more than doublo its presont size, and consequently build ing lots will appreciate correspond ingly in prico. The world has long boon familiar with and knows what a soourge of Asiatio cholera is. It is feared if the reports from Little Rock prove true, it will soon learn something of tho terrors of Arkansas cholera. Batter Roads. BosquevilLe, Jau. 4. Editor Now, ffa'n, Toxub. Dear Sir As jour paper suits mo politically aud otherwise I have con cluded to drop you a few linos In referenco to our public roads as they aro today, aud as they have been this whiter. If we are to take our roads at a criterion for push and oaten rlzo I am sure we would bo cltssed as a third rate people. While It is all right to improve Waco m all manner possible, I think itrjuite a important that our commissioners should devoto more time and pains to see that our roads aro kept In better condition . The road on wh oh I live is almost impassible for tho want of work. If I am not in staken we lrtve .not had one lick struct on our road in the last twelve months. This condition certainly must Interfere with the trade In Waco to a certain extent as well as to cripple the farmer in carry lug his produce to market. There is a vast dlfl' reuco In grumbling and complaining, especially when we have cause to complain. Our com missioners are no doubt goo it men, but aro like us all, to often neglect our duty. This eommunication is sent lor no other purpose than to call the attention of those who have or should have to see tho ueoesslty of having our public rightaways put in good traveling order.
