In Manufactures building', wlicie, of course, the main exhibit is made, ttic Italian section is almost wholh in the dark. Light filters through so sparingly that in places one can barely distinguish tho colors and outlines of the objects on view. This rejrn'ttable state of tilings is, however, easily explained. Italy came too late Tor a long time it looked as if sho would make no dis play at all at our exposition, especially since her government had given it out that no appropriation would be made. Meanwhile France Germany and Lng l.ind had been h. ie, had chosen the best sites, and picked out all the space they needed, and Italy had to be con- There ..ni will sc hi'' "f uvcry !m?' from two cents the -ard up to a sing lo pieee-a dress front - that . osts 51,000. l'oh chrome hid s. in dill, rent shades, are 'a specialty of this llrm ami were itnented, a few ears ago, In one of its members. In books, too, Italy is very strong, especially in editions do luxe. In Horticultural building is a fine nnd extensive exhibit of Italian wines such as Marsala, Chianti, Rufiino, liarolo, Aetna wines, LachrymaeChris ti, sparkling Muscats 1-0 exhibitors in all. l!ut as tho Italian commis sioner in charge of this department, tho Cavaliere T. Silombra, resignedly remarked: "California beats Italy in wines." lie had just sent a report to his government that it was' no use for Italy to try and compete with us in wines they were both cheaper and better here. In Agricultural building there aro olive oil and hemp, preserves and dried fruit, seeds and grains, liquors and cordials, caramels and honey, soap, etc., but no very largo nor good display. The mam features of the Italian ex hibit are furniture, especially inlaid and sculptured; jewelry, especially filigree and coral; marble and wooden Btatitar- , hammered iron work; da masks an 1 other heavy .silk goods; hats, felt and straw; musical instru ments; chemicals, drugs and medi cines; books, plio'togruplid, engravings and wines There is not enough spaco at my disp isal to speak fully of all tho treasures for mind and eye shown by Italy 'lo speak generally it may be said that Italy's glory has not departed that is cry evident. Her art is still alive and igorous, and .seeks constant ly new domains iu which to shine. Her wood sculpturing, for instance, is quite noel and original Toso, of Venice fa great artist, by the way, who died suddenly. from asphyxiation one night while sleeping in a hotel near the rld's fair grounds) shows some remavkable samples of his skill as the don! lo statuette of Margucrito and Meph.sto, the rear part being a carved r- presentation of the latter, while tli.' front portion shows the pretty ruai len of Goethe's poem. This statuette has been sold, at the price of 81,200. to l'otter Palmer. Kclli, of Florence, has fine bronzes, and An.'r.. ml both marble and bronzo Btatuctt-s An unusually fine exhibit is a heavy ebony table, mado by Marl ani, of Milan, elaborately inlaid with Ivory, tho picture thus formed being that of a battle scene, full of life and motion. In Klcctrieitv building a Milan firm shows electric lighting apparatus, and as globes, insulators, dynamos, etc. In Mining building there is marble of every kind, rough and hewn, also sulphur and quite an as sortment of cement, such as used in Milan and Trcviso for colored mosaic work. At the Woman's build ing there arc art treasures due to tho deft fingers of the Italian ladies -miniature paintings and embroideries, tapestries and dainty wood carving, laces and sculpturing, lint what at tracts by far the greatest attention is the priceless collection of laces sent as a loan by Queen Margherita, embrac ing1 perfect specimens from the first beginnings to the latest. Our govern ment gave bond in the sum of 5300,000 for tho bafo return of those precious laces, which in their aggrcgato are unique. Lastly must be mentioned tho Italian scotion in the Fine Arts palace, where eight rooms are occupied by a fairly representative collection of tho works of Italian urtists of the present day. There aro some 300 statues and busts, fashioned out of marble and clay, terra cotta and alabaster, bronze and silver and copper and brass. Apolloni, of Rome, has a SI 0.000 statue of Carrara marble on vicvv , and Ferrari has also some fine sculptures there. In paint ings I may cite a fine portrait of Man cini by Bistolfi, of Milan; some good marine pictures by Ciardi, of Venice; the genre paintings (of all themes from everyday lifu in the city of lagoons) of Novo; some fine canvases by Prot Corrodi, of Home; a largo number of landscapes by Carcano, of Milan, and some conscientious work by Lancer otto. Milcsi and Fragiacotno. On tha whole, though, the Italian fine art3 section is not of as fine grade as tha German or French, barely on a par with the British. Italian art, in fact, Is strongest in Manufacturers bulldlngf, whero it is applied, and most skillfully, too. Wolf vos ScninnBRjunx No Moro Hoof rrome-iatles.
