Western Indian Feuds.
Dueling is now pretty generally
recognized as a relic of barbarism,
but perhaps its most satisfactory form
Is that practiced by some tribes of
western Indians. Quarrels are rare In
a tribe, most of the fighting being re
served for outsiders, but when a feud
arises between two braves of tho same
tribe all their friends unite to see fair
play. The duelists are stripped, and
the second toss up a piece of bark.
Tho winner then seizes a piece of hard
wood seasoned by years of service and
stained with the blood of former duels.
With this war club ho hits his op
ponent as hard a blow as his strength
will permit. The injured man then
picks up the club and hits back, and
the blows alternate until one brave or
the other has had enough and declines
to pick up the club again. The punish
ment inflicted by these clubs is fright
ful, every blow bringing blood and
causing deep cuts and bruises.
