A Prominent Nun Killed liy
From His Own Pistol.
Shot
Capt. Light, a well known citizen
of Temple, was killed oarly yestor
day morning by an accidental shot
from his own pistol.
Ho was on tho north bound Mis
souri, Kaunas and Texas train and
whilo tho train was taking on water
at Echo, ho made a movement in his
seat that uausod his six shooter to
fall from his pocket. It was dis
charged, and tho ball passed up
through his log, severing tho artery.
Physicians wero on tho train and
did all they could without surgical
appliances, but thoy could not stop
tho blood, and ho rapidly bled to
death.
The body waB put off at Temple
when tho train arrived there.

S. J. Walling, indicted for em
healing the funds of the City
National Bank of Brownwood,came
to tho city Saturday ovtning with a
number of friends, who made his
$12,000 bond. The tarty returned
immediately to Brownwood.
W. J. FauBt, ex-assistant post
master at Thornton, indioted for
embezzling money from the office
was arrosted and brought in. He

Fire Last Sight.
About 7 o'clock last night fire
broke out in the brink house, No.
308 Souih Eiehth street. The de-
partment got on the ground prompt
ly and soon had the (tames under
control, though not before a good
deal of damage was done.
The building was damaged some
1,500, which is fully covered by
insurance.
II. M. T. .Kissell, who had a
drug store in the building, watt
damaged 2,000; insured for 1, 000.
A number of persons who had
rooms in tho sc-cond story lost pretty
neivny in lurmiure and nersonal
effects.

prosecute our defense further with
out imposing hardships on loved

for the suspension of the bank, for
whioh we are being punished.

Struck by a Street Car.
Mattie Ford, an old colored wo
man, pastry cook at tho Pacitic
hotel, was struck by a street car at
tho corner of Fourth and Franklin
yesterday, and suffered the fraoture
ot a teg.

did a rushing business last Satur
day. On Christmas Eve the air was

The Nineteenth District Court
adjourned for the term on Saturday.

The funeral of J. E. Moore took
place yesterday at his late residence
on North Fifth Btreet. In'.erment
at Oakwood.
Merchants say the purchases for
Christmas presents have been large,
and as a rule, consisted of some
thing useful.
The funeral of J. B. Payne took
place at 3 o'clock yesterday after
noon, and his remains were laid to
rest in Oakwood.
The immense store of Goldstein
& Migel was crowded to its utmost
all day Saturday, and on until clos
ing time Saturday night.
The holder of ticket No. 5002,
in the Goldstein & Migel gift en
terprise, will get $50 by presenting
the ticket at the firm's counting
room.
The News today is a brief edi
tion. In order to enable its force
to oat at home in peace their Christ
mas dinneis, the forms were closed
at 10 a. in.
In tho Goldstein it Migel voting
contest Mr. Whaling received the
highest number of votes and was
given the $50 in gold. Mr. Bate
man was second.
Those who think Waco has no
princely merchants or stores whioh
would loom up grandly in any oity
in the union should have gone
through Sanger Bros. Saturday
evening.
The police ofiioers of the oity on
Saturday night presented Mayor
McCnlloch with a gold headed cane
and Marshal Neill with a handsome
Meerschaum pipe. The presenta
tion speeches were made by M. B.
Davis.
Saturday night a Mr. Hot. aid, of
Bryan, was held up and robbed by
two white men in East Waco, just
beyond the bridge. lie was on his
way to the Waco and Northwestern
depot to take the train for Bryan.
A revolver and an open knife were
tbe persuaders used. The robbers
got $0 and a watch.
Tin: News has been sending out
for the past month, quite a number
of sample copies. The carrier boys
have been distributing them; with
Saturday's issue they were discon
tinued. If you have been receiv

Mr. Crippon, the enterprising
ereen grocer on the corner of
Franklin and South Fifth, has one
of the finest displays of meats ever
shown in the city. Mr. Robinson
on the Avenue also has a splendid
display. John Dollins also shows
up in fine shape with a display of
meats calculated to tempt the ap
petite of those who Bee it.
