I!. Craw ford of llasl.ell, wlten Mr. A. V. Sprinfr or, demity sheriff of Haskell county, took the trail of Crawtord and cap tured him at Kasoya, Knox count'. The deputy sherilV then took him be fore the mail carrier, who identified Craw ford, and he now awaits the at tention ol some United Mates marshal. Crawlord has lived in Haskell about :i'ear. Train No. 2 on the main line, of this Oulf, Colorado and Santa l'e railroad, Van over and killed Dr. .lohn Wajfley at Cleburne on tliu nifflit of 12th inst., at about 7 o'clock. Dr. John Wafjley is a brother of Dr. T. .1. Wsijrlpy, the. a-ailroad company's resident physician at Cleburne, and brother-in-law of Col. .1. A. Styson of the state militia, lie was also an old settler of Johnson county. His sons, Kay and Moss, were present at this time of the accident. A Midnight Intruder. A couple, of nights ago, between IS and 1 a. m., Mrs 1 I'. Kifer, who lives in Crockett, Trinity county, was awak ened by one of her children, when she found Unit there was a man in her room. Thinking at first it was her husband she called to him, when the mau stepped outside. Mrs. Fifer then went to her husband's room and told him what had occurred, and that the mau was standing outside and look ing in at the window. Jlr. Kifer went out, but as soon as the man saw him he run. Fifer shot at him three times. A man by the name of Owens, who is merchandising at Crockett, was arrest ed on suspicion, as he was seen soon after by Filer at the I'ickwick and asked Fifer some questions. Keeves is wounded in tho right hand, and sa.i that James fired first. He charges that .lames had been writing to his wife and that family troubles on that account have existed for some time. A few mornings ago, he says, he dreamed that lie found u letter from his wife to James in his wife's silk dress. When ho awoke he wont to her dress and found the letter as he had dreamed. It is full of endearments and signed '-.Mrs. T. L. James." She promised him that if ho would forgive her she would bo true to him. They made up, but on the night of the Uilllnir he learned that James was in town and that his wife had gme to meet him. He and James met late that night at u dance, and the shooting followed. The governor has granted a respite until January 12, lh'JI, from December 22l inst.. in the case of Kd Nichols, sentenced to hang in Austin mi the lat ter date. Wilson county, was shot by a barber named Kmanuel I'adren The two men. with others, had been drinking heavily and Lang claimed that some one assaulted h.iin. When the attempt was made l,ang struck the man with a si-shooler, not 1,-nowiiiLi- who he was. in the dark. It was I'.idi-on. Kang sas. and mutual recognition and apologies followed and i l..ing started to his lied in the camp yard I'ndron went paitof the way, drew his pistol and shot l.ang m the i arm. breaking the bone near, the shoul der. Armstrong of ( ooper, Delta county, having a S.1) account against Ila.luwood, went to lla.lewood's wife and compelled her to pay the debt to avoid attachment of the crop. When llav.lewood heard of this he wrote Arm strong a letter ordering him to pay tho money back to his wife. A few morn ing's since Ila.lewood went to Cooper, saw Armstrong crossing the sipiare I and lour lncueeiuai sums were nicuai Armstrong-, who hastened to his place of business and prepared to co.ntinue the light. Ila.lewood mounted his horse and rode to the sherilf and irave himself up. Against Colonel lliiiistnii. In the quo warranto suit brought by Colonel lloitsUm-ttf Dallas, claiming that the adjutant general had no pow er to fmst him from the ollice of col onel in the olunteer guard by order ing a reorganization and a new elec tion of regimental ollicers of the tth regiment, Judge Morris, of the district court, ul Austin, decided against Col onel Houston, on the ground that his term of ollice had expired. The con stitution provides that the duration ot no term of ollice shall exceed two years, except of those, otherwise fixed by the constitution. Houston's term, under this ruling, had expired about eighteen mouths ago. An incidental question whether the civil court has jurisdiction in military questions of this character was decided in the nllimative. Tlie state roiiiptrclli't' unit tlic Ciiilt'ctor.. It transpired that on November 27 the slate comptroller issued a lengthy circular-letter to the collectors over the state, urging them to send their collec tions to the state treasury immediately, as the cash balance was running down low, and likely to run dry altogether unless something besides asking credit ors to hold off was done at once. The collectors were notilied that if they would send in the. collections without waiting until December I it would tide over for this month, but they must keep up the rush for the month of De cember or the bottom would drop out Jf they came promptly to the help of the treasury it would be no hardship, though the law contemplates they shall not remit till the end of the month, and their action would meet with uni versal applause from the people. The old story that love laughs at locksmiths and parental restraints was fully exemplilled near lien Arnold, Mi lam county, a few days ago when a young man succeeded, after one pre vious failure, in stealing the object of his future happiness from under tho paternal shingled roof and successfully evaded a party headed bv the lather who were in hot pursuit. They secured the necessary papers in Kails county and repaired to an ex-justice of the peace, ho performed the ceremony, as he had done before being deprived of his justice's robe, evidently to the satisfaction of all concerned. Imagine their surprise after upon learning that a justice's authority to the nuptial knot does not extend through life, nor good behavior, and that they were not legally united. So they repaired to a minister, who performed the ceremony legally constituting them man and wife forever. The public school in TavJor, Wil liamson county, has tulopted a sys tem of drilling the pupils to prevent a panic in case of lire. IVriodicallv a lire alarm is sounded without warning, and the pupils are required to gently but hastily vacate the building. A few days ago,' in a drill of this kind, the throe floors of the building were emp tied of between .".00 and 700 children, and the children returned to their rooms again, all within the space of three minutes. When the alarm is given neither the pupils or teachers know whether the building is actually on (ire or whether it is their regular drill. The building is heated throughout by hot air or steam, and a tire would have to originate from below.
