The wholesale and j jlihers' trade continues quiet hut, on the whole, improved since the date of our last weekly report. The doinind is chiefly, as for some months past, for staple goods, plantation supplies, etc. Dry goods are steady, with local prices un changed, and there have been no changes in pro visions wotthy of note or special mention. Special Telegram to the Statesman. Fobt Wobih, February 28. The state immigration committee of thirty-one and the executive committee of seven have been in session all day to-day. The ex ecutive committee is still in session at midnight. Reports were reoeived from a number os the senatorial districts. Major Elliott insisted of his resignation, and F. B. Chilton, of Pecos, was appointed act ing seoretary. A resolution was adopted by both com mittees endorsing John Howard and his work in St. Louis, and substantially, was sent to him. General Hamby, of Austin, represented that city and district, nd reported that Austin would spend $10,000. The old question of county work versus state work, came up and is still under dis cussion by the executive committee with closed doors. A great deal of fruit planting has been done in the vioiuity of San Angelo this year. One land owner alone has ordered 6,000 different varieties of trees, whioh he will set out on his property. San Antonio Times. The city authorities of Fort Worth have ordered the planting of fifty shade trees on the grounds surrounding each public school house in the city. This is a wise provision that might well be emulated by the authorities of every oity in the state. Denison News. It seems to be pretty well settled in the minds of the people of San Antorjio, who ought to know, that the agreement made several months ago by the county and oity, to build a joint county court house and oity hall on Military plaza, will be productive of no result. The oity authorities 01 ttempBieaa have offered all the land required to locate a new passenger depot on the publio square on condition that the Central Rail way company plaoe their contemplated building thereon. The railway authorities have made no answer yet. The celebrated Qnitequa ranch, located in the Panhandle of Texas, has just been bought by L. M. The whole outfit was bought for the sum of $700,008. Strange to say, there is no mill for the manufacture of white paper east of the Mississippi. There are only two of any kind, and they are devoted to tne mann faoture of straw wrapping paper. The projected mill at Denison, for the making of book and news paper, will there fore be the pioneer of the industry weBt of that river. Denison News. In connection with the meager salaries given by Texas to judges of its high oourts it is stated that Louisiana gives $10,000 a year to its supreme judge, and ,000 to each of his associates, no state ought to be niggardly in paying for the best talent for such places. Successful lawyers cannot be expected to surrender lucrative praotioe for the mere honor of a high station. Waco Day. Reports continue to oome in with refer ence to the death of cattle in the farming districts. The chief cause of this seems to be that the rains washed the eubstanoe out of the grass, and the farmers having made no arrangements for feeding their stock, the animals died of exposure and insufficient food. Those that are still living are very poor, and many of them are liable to die before the grass gets up enough to support them. There have also been a great many deaths among oornfed cattle that have had all they could eat. Standing in the mud for so many long weeks was enough to nndermine the constitutions of the toughest range steers. As a rule feeders in this seotion have not done well at all, and the result of the feeding will be an immense outlay of prov inder for a small amount of beef. Dallas Newt.
