Ed News To resumo my nar
rative In January 18G2 Thos
Cabinas was killed by the Indians
on Cherokee The following ac
count of Cabinas death was ob
tained from Mathoiv Kuykendall
Cabinas had received a wound in
tho battle of Elkhora had been
stolen out by the Yankee soldiers
und came to Texas He stayed
all day at my house on Sunday be
fore tho Monday on which ho was
killed Tom had lost one of his
oxen and enquired of me if I had
seen it I told hira that I had and
also told him whore the strayed
ox could be found I told him
further that ho had better look
out or some day when ha was by
himself the Indians would pick
him up He said that he disliked
to ask some of the neighbors to go
with him every time one of his
oxen strayed off but that ho had
to get the ox the next day and that
would be his last trip by himself
and sure enough it was The next
morning Cibinas took his big
rifle mounted his horse a good
horse and proceeded up Chero
kee creek in search of the ox
About 11 a m Ruben Gray heard
a gun fire but thought nothing of
it About sunset Cabinas not ap
pearing his folks became uneasy
for his safety and sent some ono
to my house to get up a party to
go in search of the missing man
It was raining hard bitter cold
and very soon becamo pitch dark
so wo did not go on the search un
til morning When morning came
several of us went up tho creek
About midday wo heard a gun fire
and straightway went in that di
rection After covering about
threequarters of a mile we came
upon n second search party who
had come on after us and now
that they had found the body of
Cabinas fired a gun to let us know
The dead man had two arrow
wounds in the back and an arrow
wound under each arm He was
also scalped and his coat was gone
otherwise ho was not mutilated
Tho body was found in the road
near Soldiers waterhole Cherokee
On examination we found that the
Indians had taken it time about
running Cabinas and had as a
matter of course finally run him
down He had fired but one shot
at tho red devils We found his
gun in a thicket hard by with the
lock broken off
About this time Neuton
Philips was killed probably by
the same band of Indians at the
Slacker ranch on the head of Cher
okee At the time of Philips
death he was employed by Al
Robins to herd horses Some of
the horses had strayed off and
Philips unarmed went in search
of them leaving other men to
take care of tho horse herd Some
Indians saw and pursued him
He made for tho ranch houso
which he succeeded in reaching
without a scratch After securing
a gun Philips came out into the
yard in order to get a shot at his
persuers just as he raised his
gun to fire an Indian one hundred
and fifty yards distant and who
had laid an old Henry rifle in the
fork of a live oak to steady his aim
shot him in the hip Philips re
treatedinto tho house the other
men charged the Indians and af
ter a sharp conflict succeeded in
driving them off No Indians were
killed Philips died within a few
days Lejion SquEEZEH
