The tornado, coming, 'aa It did. at midnight, caught people without a moment'e warning. A rain form preceded the wind and after the tomad'j passed a acene of complete desolation followed. The tornado broke upon the town with rreat force and wrougm 11a terrible havoc within a few minuted' time, and continuing Into the rich f.irrntng country north of Mar quette, cruised further damage. At Marqutte many residence were com pletely demolished. th wreckage being carried .away entirely, while others were taken up bodily, moved a short distanre away and drnpied to the earth. Many victims were killed aa they lay asleep. Others, maimed and bleed ing, awoke to find themselves burled In the wreckage of their former home. Following the storm came a lull. Soon the cries of Injured and frightened pe-y. pie could e heard on every hand. Men with lanterns appeared her and there among the wrecked buildings and aa qulrklv as posx'ble the work of rescue m as begun- progress waa slow because of the darkness, and It waa some time before anything like a systematic effort could be made to remove the Injured and before aid could be asked of neigh boring lowns.
