Birmingham. Ala.. May 9. The gen eral conference of the Southern Meth odist church passed Its first law Tues day, when It concurred In the main report of the revivals committee, as ' amended, on powers of unordanlcd I preachers. Under the law, preachers ' who hare not been ordained, may preach the gospel, celebrate the rite of matrimony, and In the absence of an elder or bishop, administer baptism, and In the absence of the presiding el der, control the appointment of all ervlcess to be held In the church In hts f harge with the understanding that no permanent powers of ordination are conferred until the same shall bo granted by the laying on of hands as he shall have met the disciplinary re quirements. A resolution was also Introduced with a view of securing congress and the state legislatures to enact laws to protect dry counties from the ship ment of liquor from other localities. It waa signed by G. M. Napier. W. G. Post and John W. rule, and was so approved that a motion was made to suspend the rule and allow It to be passed at once. Adjournment came before action waa taken. The finance eomrallttee concurred In the memorial from Mississippi con ference to change the distribution of funds raised for the care of superan nuated preachers and widows and or phans of deceased ministers. Among the memorials presented was erne from the St. Iuls conference for the removal of the time limit fixed fai pastors to remain at once place. The seventh bi ennial convention of the Order of the International Brotherhood of Locomo tive Engineers met hero Wednesday at the Grand Opera House. The sessions f the convention will extend through a series of four weeks, and many Im portant matters will be disposed of. The city Is decorated In honor of the 1,000 delegates and visitors. The session was called to order by Grand Chief Engineer W. S. Stone and waa largely preliminary. After a brief address Mr. Stone appointed a com mittee on credentials. Government Has Filed an Injunction In Indiana Circuit Court. Washington. May 9 The attorney general has made public the following statement: "The government has filed In the circuit court of the United States for the district of Indiana a petition for an Injunction against cer tain associations, corporations and In dividuals comprising what is common ly known as the 'drug trust of the United States. The parties defend ant specially named In the bill have voluntarily combined together to con trol the prices at which proprietary medicines and drugs t!all be sold to consumers through retail druggists.
