Murder mn Suicide at Frt

A dreadful tragedy occurred
here last night Two soldiers from
Fort Brown the cook and gardener
became involved in a quarrel which
resulted in th death of both The
trouble was about as follows It
seems that the cook at Fort Brown
Keppler by name has been in th
habit of freqseuting a low dive
callsd Coney Island located near
the garrisos where he Keppler
was paying attention t a certain
negro o au jLaet night at about
ten oclock on oing there ha found
the gardsuer from the fort known
as Barney Whalen in the house
aad a row eusued Keppler thes
wisst to his quarters in the garrison
got his pistol and returned whon
Whalen ran towards the main en
f the garrison Keppler following
in close pursuit As they reached
the gate Keppler fired four thotb
at Wkslsn the third shot only tak
ingeffwcl the ball enteringthe right
side of stomach and coming out
urer left hip Whalen fell at ence
and Keppler then ran along the
garrison fence t the lower gate
and cultured the fort The guard
called to him to halt whereupon
Keppler kneeled down and placing
hi pistol to his forehead blew out
his own brains the hall entering
over right eye and passing out of
the top ot the head He died in
stantly Whalen was not dead
whtfit found and was csrried to
the hospital where he died at
about 1215 Ther will hwth be

this afternoon There had been
no bad blood known to exist be
tween the two lately but Keppler
was heard to remark yesterday af
teruuou that he intended to kill his
man The alfair is greatly re
gretted and has cast a gluoui over
Fort Brown
