climate of the Lower Rio Grande
Valley are by nature best adapted

fceedingly mild climate Frequently
the entire winter passes withontja

any cold weather before Christmas
Fruit cnlturo has not been atiempteri
in this county on a large scale but
lliere is one large banana plantation
bn which this delicious fruit yields

perfection Grapes are also raised
extensively growing in almost everj
yard They ripen from two to four

all of their own table wines Oranges
and lemons also grow in profusion
and this section could easily be madt

oranges Sugar cane is also one of

Bio Grande about thirty miles above
its mouth atid directly opposite the
Mexican city of Mntainoros It bos
a large trade with small tuwns alon
the river forover 300 miles the ex
eut of steamboat navigation It has
commercial relations with the gulf
porta by the port of Brazos de San
tiago with which it is connected by
tne Bio Grande railroad It also has
ommunication with tbe inteiior by
stage to Alice connecting with the
T xas Mexican and the Aransas Pass

terey railroad to Rio Grande City
and thence by stage to Pena Station
Brownsville is laid off squarely with
streets cf good width and is bnilt up
with solid brick buildings and has a
fine city market where all vegeta
bles meats tresb fisb game etc are
on seal at remarkably low prices
Tne city fire department is well
equipped and most effective There
are three churches Catholic Episco
pal and Presbyterian The educa
tional advantages of Brownsville are
unsurpassed by any town and une
qualled by few of its size The pub
lic school building valued at 30000
is one of tbe handsomest and best
equipped in tbe State and stands as
a monument to tbe progress of tbe
city It employs fourteen teachers
aud about six hundred pupils are in
daily attendance There are three
Catholic schools St Josephs Col
lege for boys Ihe convent school for
girls and St Alosyins school for
boys both of the latter being taught
by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word
convent Another schcol for girls is
the Presbyterian mission school
Among other public buildings may
be mentioned the court house a
large aid costly bnildins which is a
credit to the county aud ihu custom
house which is oue of the hand
bnmest federal buildings in the south

dences
The population numbers about
7000 about threefourths Mexcan
It is one of tbe prettiest little towns
in tho Siate and on account of its
