COST AND PROFITS OF
IRRIGATION
Irrigation by canal and dit
ches costs from 2 to 10 for
each acre supplied for con
struction of the canal and
about 1 an acre yearly to keep
them in repair Dams for re
servoirs to catch and hold
storm waters generally cost
from 3 to 15 for each acre
supplied and the cost of keep
ing up repairs will be much
less than in the case of canas
Of C45 pumping irrigators
who answered inquiries of the
Kansas station 5 used gasoline
engines 12 Bteam engines 10
horse powers and 512 used
windmills The average coBt
of horse powers was 7375 of
windmills 11831 of steam
engines 28312 and gasolne
engines 485 including pumps
in all cases The depth of the
wells varied from 10 feet to
240 The higher the water is
raised the greater the power
required The same power will
ruise twenty four times as much
water 10 feet as 240 feet in the
same time Where it is necps
nary lo elevate the water only
two or three feet a hydraulic
ram is the cheapest machine
and it reqnires neither power
not attendance to operate it
The profits of irrigation are
unquestionable With garden
and fruit crops the profits per
acre often mount into the hun
dreds and occasionally pass
the thousand dollar mark Even
with field crops the profit is so
sure and so great that irrigated
lands always sell for from ten
to one hundred times as much
per acre as adjacent lands that
are not irrigated Of 810 irrig
ators in Kansas only six re
ported no profit Irrigation has
been highly profitable in even
such rainy state as New Jersey
and Florida

With a better understanding of tho
transient nature of the many phys

rightly directed There is comfort in
the knowledge that so many forms of
sickness aro not due to any actual dis
ease but simply to a constipated condi

remedy with millionsof families andis
everywhere esteemed so highly by all
who value good health Its beneficial
effects are due to the fact that it is the
