A NEN TEXTILE
Made from China Grass Which
Belongs to the Nettle
Family
New York Ledger
A plant of the nettle family
prOluces fiber that may prove
of every great commercial value
indeed it has such poHaibilities
that 25000 has been offered
for an invention that will se
parate the libers from the bark
Up to date the cost of this pro
cess ia so great that there ia
nothing commercial in the art
icle traveler says that this
Rhea fiber makes cloth and
cordage that have rival for
sireng h and durability It is
from this material that the
mummy cloths of Egypt were
made It has been known as
China grasSj and is noted for
its great strength
The trouble lies in separat
ing the strong silky fibers from
the other bark which ia Batur
ated with tenacious gum Most
of the fiber thus far has been
patiently and carefully worked
out by hand by the women
and children of the locality
where it is grown It is assert
ed that the chemists and ma
chinists of both Europe and
America have been for tbirtj
years trying lo 6olve the pn
blcrn of separating the fiber
from the refuse matter Tb
latest experiment is so interest
ing as showing the number of
handlings necessary to trans
form this product of nature
into tin available material that
an account of it will be worthy
of attention uThe Gomess
process adopts silicate of soda
for the elimination of tho re
sins and eHVcls it without the
slightest injury to the fiber
After iIih ribbons or strips of
bark have been freed from dirt
they are placed in weak acid
baths for the night Next morn
ing they are passed through a
mild alkaline bath and then
boiled in weak eolutions of
lOaustic soda to which bine has
breu added When washed
and dried by the usual me
chanical means the fibers em
rge as a long silky filisse
entirely ft > e from the cuticle
and resinous gums in which
they Were imbedded clean
white and ready for the comb
of the spinner
They take the most beautiful
dyes and can be worked into
every variety of fabric from
gorgeous velvets to cheap drills
and delirate lacen Ihe com
bined lightness and toughness
of the liber render it peculiarly
suitable for tents and ship
canvas Three fifths more cloth
of equal strength can be made
from Rhea thanfrom thn same
weight of linen that is to say
1000 yards of the Rhea canvas
weigh only as much ao GOO
yards of linen Its durability
and resisting power to strain

THE VISIT TO WATSON
It Is Believed He Will Formal
ly Be Asked to Withdraw
Atlanta Ga Oct 15 The
meeting between the Populist
National executive committee
headed by Marion Butler and
Thomas E Watson is exppcted
to develop a political sensation
It is generally believed in in
side Populiet circles here that
the meeting will result in a
formal reqnest ou Mr Wateon
to withdraw There are rumors
of official positions lobe tender
ed Mr Watson in ca3e he will
draws and the Democratic par
ty is successful at the Novem
ber election The store of the
proposed offers range all the
way down from a cabinet port
folio but no one claims to have
definite information as to what
is proposed There is grave
doubts however whether Mr
Watson will withdraw It is
freely stated that the Populist
manifesto of yesterday was by
no means pleasant to the vice
piesideulial candidate and the
visit of the committee is said to
be due to a fear that he would
take precipitate action before a
conference could be arranged
That fear however was set at
rest by a message that Mr
Watson sent to Chairman But
ler stating his willingness to
meet the committee Mr Wat
son allayed the fears of ill
Populist leaders by the state
ment that he would wait the
coming of the committee
The candidates letter of ac
ceptance will not be published
until after the coming confer
ence although he was expected
to have given it to the pi ess to
night
What the outcome of the
committee will be is altogether
guess work but there is a grow
ing impression tuat Mr Wat
son will take more kindly to
the alleged suggestion of with
drawal than he would have
done at an earlier date in the
campaign He is expected to
leave Thompson for Atlanta as
membership in the committeo
because of their action in aban
doning Watson and supporting
Sewall and the silver democrats
congressional candidates They
were denounced as being tin
worthy of coj fide nee A resolu
tion was also passed callingon
the national populist commit
tee to remove Kolb and E
Seymour who has followed
Kolb from membership in th
committee from Alabama and
rcommending that Congess
m in Goodwin an Frank Baltz
elle be elected in their places
The places of Kolb and Bow
man in the state committee
were filled by the election of
Congressman M W Howaid
and Julius Davidson
