A NEN TEXTILE
Made from China Grass Which
Belongs to the Nettle
Family
New York Ledger
A plant of the nettle family
produces liber that may prove
of every great commercial value
indeed it has such possibilities
that 825000 has been offered
for an invention that will se
parate the fibers from the bark
Up to date the cost of this pro
cess is so great that there is
nothing commercial in the art
Rhea fiber makes cloth and
cordage that have rival for
sirensh and durability It is
from this material that the
mummy cloths of Egypt were
made It has been known as
China grass and is notedfor
its great strength
The Irotible lies in separat
ing the strong silky fibers from
the other bark which is satnr
ated with tenacious gum Most
of the fiber thus far has been
patiently and carefully worked
out by hand by tho women
and children of the locality
where it is grown It is assert
ed that the cheniistB and ma
chinists of both Europe and
Ameiicn liava been for thirty
years trying to solve the prt
blem of separating the fiber
from tho refuse matter The
latest experiment is so interest
ing as showing the number of
handlings necessary to trans
form this product of nature
into an available material that
an account of it will be worthy
of attention The Goiuess
process adopts silicate of soda
for the elimination of the re
sins and ejects it without the
slightest injury to the liber
Alter the ribbons or strips of
bark have been freed from dirt
lhey are placed in weak ueid
baths for the night Noxl morn
ing they are passed through a
mild alkaline bath and then
boiled in weak solutions of
uaubiit soda to which sine has
linen added When washed
and dried by the usual me
chanical means the libera utu
erge as a long silky lihese
entirely free Irom the cuticle
and rebinous gums in which
they were imbedded clean
white and ready for the comb
of the spinner
They take the riiost beantifnl
dyes and can be worked into
every variety bf fabric from
gorgeous velvets to cheap drills
and delicate laces Ihe com
bined lightness and toughness
of the liber render it peculiarly
suitable for tents and ship
canvas Three lifths norj cloth
of equal strehgth can be made
from Ithea than fiom the same
weight of linen that is to say
1000 yards of the lihea canvas
weiMi only as much as GOO
yards of linen Its durability
and resisting power to strain
are also much greater The
Government l India is taking
ellVctnai steps for the rapid ex
tentton of its cultivation

THE VISIT TO WATSON
It Ts Believed He Will Formal
ly Be Asked to Withdraw
Atlanta Ga Oct 15 The
meeting between the Populist
National executive committee
icle A traveler says that this headed by Marion Butler and
Thomas E Watson is expected
to develop a political BenBati > n
It is generally believed iu in
side Populist circles here that
the meeting will result in a
formal request on Mr Watson
to withdraw There are rumbrs elle be elected in their places
of official positions to be tendei
ed Mr Watson in case hewitU
draws and the Democratic par
ty is successful at the Novem
ber election The store of the
proposed offers range all the
way down from a cabinet port
folio but no one claims to have
definite information as to what
is proposed There iB grave
doubts however whether Mr
Watson will withdraw It is
freely slated that the Populist
manifesto of yesterday was by
no means pleasant to the vice
presidential candidate and the
visit of the committee is said to
be dne to a fear that ho would
take precipitate action before a
conference could be arranged
That fear however was set at
rest by a message that Mr
Watson sent to Chairman But
ler stating his willingness to
meet the committee Mr Wat
son allayed the fears of the
PopuHst leaders by the state
ment that he would wait the
coming of the committee
The candidates letter of ac
ceptance will not be published
until after the coming confer
ence although he was expected
to havo given it to the press to
night
What the outcome of Ihe
committee will be is altogether
ness Work but there is a grow
ing impression that Mr Wat
son will take more kindly lo
the alleged suggestion of with
drawal than he would have
done at an earlier date in the
campaign lie isxexpected to
leave Thompson for xVilanta as
booh as he is definitely inform
ed as to the time the committee
will arrive herer There as been
some dispute as to whether life
conference will be held at
Atlanta or Thomson but it is
thought Atlanta hits been de
