CHANGES IN NEW YORK
Old St John8 Cemetery New
York to Be Transformed
Into a Public Park
New York Novembpr 18
Today ie the last day for re
moving the remains of the dead
from the old St Johns cemete
ry at Hudson and Clarkson
streets When the city pur
chased the land from Trinity
church for the purpose of con
verting it into a public park
all persons interested were
notified to remove the remains
of their dead before Sunday
and the notice stated After
that date work upon the park
will be started The remains of
the dead will not be disturbed
but the gravestones will be
buried
In compliance with Ibis no
tice only seven excavations
have been made and23 bodies
removed
Ten thousand graves Old St
Johns eemetry occupied only a
single acre of land and yet it
is believed that more than 10
000 interments have been made
there Records weie poorly
kept in the first years of the
century when Trinity church
went beyond the city limits to
establish the new cemetery in
what is now a populous district
crowded with tenements and
busy bnsiness blocks Its great
est harvest of any season was
reaped in 1805 when the cho
lera killed so many in New
York
Among the persons of some
not interred in the cemetery
Was John Ferdinand better
known as Baron Castelrotto
ITe diprl in 1S37 and is yet re
memheied by some of the older
men who were frecfuentefs of
Wall Street in those days for
the Baron was a daring specu
lator What is left of him and
his last nut row resting place
will likely remain unmarked
beneath the sod of the new
park
Soon these will be buri ° d
from sight and a emiling park
will take the place of a scene
of desolation
