Oak Hill Nurseries com'iiand what they justly deserve, a cpn-Bpicuou-place iu the foreground. Situated on a beautiful emin ence a mile west ot'the court house, the view a3 one approach es the grounds, is perfectly las cinating. For the last qu irter ot a mile approaching the ground-:, the road leads up a grad , rising gently and regu larly, the whole scene being calculated to call up in the vis itor's mind s oino enchanting chapter of some favorite author whose f.irte is to describe the gorsms beauties that nature ha3 distributed on earth, with such lavish had. Nature and art have "united happily and harmoniously, at Oak I fill, to mould the useful and the beautiful, and combine them in most attractive shape. As 3"ou enter the grounds, a matter ot fifty yards from the main entrance, on each side ot the broad walk, is .a spacious green hous", temptingly invit ing you to enter and rest it you are weary, or if you are not thus, to quietly inhale tlie odor of flowers of richest fraguance, or least the eye on tint, where nature herself scorns to liavi striven to surpass any of her former achievements. But as mm cannot liv-j alone by that which gratifies the sight, or quicken3 liis pulses of delight, we will leave these for the pres ent, and ask the reuler to go with us to those parts of the grounds where the palate can be gratified, promising- him to return to the gieen and hot hon3e3, before tking leave of this inviting resort. First we come to that part of the nursery devoted to apples. From the earliest civilization, apples have commanded a fair share ot man's attention, and have contributed largely to his health and comfort. Some are of the opinion that apples had something to do with Adam's lo-s of Eden. Now without pretending to offer iin opinion on this moated if not vexed question, it nmst be admitted that Eve only exhibited the tra ditional good taste tha't has ever been a distinguishing chiracter istic ot her sex, even if she did eat an apple. An erroneous opinion haslong .prevailed, that the soil and cli mate of this portian of Texas are not adopted t-i the growth ot apples. It is true, the earth docs not produce them spjnta neously; but it is equally true, that by the jndicious manage ment of Mes-ra. Lockett & El ward, a very fine apple can be.grown in Texas. This can not be done, however, without regard to soil, and its proper preparation for tin growth of the tree. This information they give gratuitously to every one purchasing trjes, furnishing each purchaser a pamphlet, in addi tion to a catalogue of what they grow, full and complete inform ation as tojhc charicter of the soil liMBhpted to the growth of jBus fruit3, under the hmHox Transplvnt- ING ETC. Ot tho early or summer ap ples, ripening from the middle of May till the last of August, they have nineteen varieties. It yon purchase trees at the Oak Hill Nursery, you will get 110 tree that will not como up to what it is represented, it the di rections given for its cultivation are followed. No amount ot money could induce the propri etors tcr let a mean or worthless variety of fruit ti'ccs of any de scription, leave their establish ment. They aro wise for that. The reputation they have earned for integrity is too highly prized by tlrenr, ami of too much value in their business tobo forfeited for a tew paltry dollar:-,. lu looking over .their cntalogife, il any particular variety strikes yonr faucy, if it is not adapted to this country, tlfcy will at once tell yon its defects. Of tho early variety of apples, they hive fivo thousand trees of the proper age for tnirnplanting next fall, or at the proper ss i sun for this p-rt of the biKin'-3 Of autumn apples, ripening from September to November, they hive fifteen varieties, and no fewer thin five thousand trees suitable for transplanting in the tall. The winter varie ties are all of Southern origin, and consequently thoroughly acclimated, and therefore a ulost invaluable tree. These apples ripen from October until De cember and will keep until May. Here is demonstration, j that by the exercise ot reasona ble! care and sound judgment, the thrifty farmer m-iy enjoy the luxury of apples all the year rouud. Messrs. Lockett ife Ed wards have no less than six thousand trees of the last named class, suitable tor transplanting at the proper season. They have, also, as, man y as twelve vtricties of crab tipples that ripen in July. Many of these varieties are enormous bearers, and -when .entirely ripe, are delicious eating fruit. "We come next to poach trees, aud our mouth fairly waters as we contemplate their tempting beauty and their delicious flavor, summing in their taste all that is grateful to the most delicate palate. Of freestone peaches, they have twentysix varieties, j ripening from May till October. Of clingstones, they have twelve varieties, ripening from the middle of Juuc to the last ot "November. In addition to those already named, there are 110 towers than twenty-five varieties of new peaches at Oak Hill Nursery, besides the Italian and the Van Burcn gol-Jen dwarf, We know it is objected by some who do not like to undergo the labor, and the care necessary to grow select peaches success fully, that grafted trees are not full bearers. There is a great error prevailing on this subject. Wesaw peach trees at Oak Hill, of the second years' growth, its full ot peaches as the timber was capable of supporting, when they come to maturity. We saw trees there of only three 3'ears' growth, which wc arc con fident will yield more than a bushel ot f.-nit. Now it a tree will do that in its babyhood, what may be expected ot it in the healthy vigor of mature man hood ? These peaches arc all ot Southern origin, and fully adapted to our climate, soil and seasons. There are pears ripening from the first ot June until winter, embracing as many as thirty varieties. These have been se lected after thorough testing from the almost innumerable varieties of this fruit, as being well adapted to our soil and climate. , ' The variety of plums is ex tensive, combining as many. as fifteen kinds, fully adapted to the soil and climate ot' Texas. The variety ot nectarines, reaches up aa high as ten, and thsy all thrivc-and do well. The line ot "figs takes up a list covering eleven varieties. This is a fruit peculiarly adapt ed to our soil and climate, and has never been known, for even u single season, to fail to mature perte;tly. One might be ex cused tor thinking Texs was the native country of the fig, it tlirives and does so well licrn. And yet, incredible to tcl', though it is true many farmers h xve not a tree on their prem ises. This should not be so. The varieties ot quinces, rasp berries and blackberries, are very large, like everything else cultivated in fhfe mammoth nursery, and aro ot Southern growth -.and fully acclimated. Thejtssovtnicntof mist-cllaueous fruit is large, consisting of almonds, chesnnts, American, Spanish, and English walnuts, mulberries, pomegranates, largo sweet, and a very prolific bearer. The great advantage one se cures in purcf rising from these gentlemen, is the fact that every trpf, (vhich leaves their estab lishment, is warranted to como fully rip to the standard it is represented fo be, or the money is at once ref'inded, or the" trees duplicated, at the option ol the purchaser. Til the grape department, 'they lrave a large variety ot select vines. Though, like conscien tious men, as they are known to be, thoy do-rfot recommend ilsem ver' highly.. But the lrybred varieties are very superior an'd admirably adapted to our soil aud climate. These they rec ommend. There arc? no less than twenty varieties- of these h'ybred, not itu-ludfrfg half a dozen varieties nf tha.t delicious grape, th j Scirpp'srnong. But the feature that struck us with unbounded admir ation, was not a whilcblaeJcbcrni, j, hut something alifv.ut as won derful, being something new un der the sun This "was the white dewberry,, and being n native of Tcsas is a very hardy, and a very desirable, fruitj being with all a wonderfully, jmilihc bearer. This is a most dcJicioite berry, and very large, measuring " fully an inch in diameter. The vine is easy of culture, and we hope to see the time when it will he found in even farmer's gar den in the State. Yet we are not so selfish as to deire an exclusive monopoly of all the good things, and arc willing "that our sister States should share in the pleasure of the new discovery. The white dew berry is no donbt destined to sprvad with great rapidity, and will settle iu other Slates,- just as readily as the immigrants troin those States attach them selves to the fertile aud healthy soil ot Texas. tue ornamental department is perfectly bewildering to con template, both on account of the endless variety grown on the area devoted to it. and the cap tivating beauty of the delicately tinted flowers. -As we wended our way o"r the smooth walks, "flowers on' the -right of us, flowers on the left of us, flowers, in fron't of 113," we thought the view which .we took in, would drive a French florist,- with his mercrial temperameut, into ecstacics ot delight bordering on the frantic, and while we had a Frenchman in our mind, -although flowers are not calculated to call up visions, other- than gentle and pleasant ones, wc could not avoid thinking liow easy a matter it would have b.-en to comply with Voltaire's last request, ''cover me with fljwcrs," had his career been destined to terminate at Oak Hill, as it is, instead -of in Paris as it was. For evergreens and shrub', the four quarters ot the globe s.-em to have been taxed heavily. and contributed liberally of their rich stores. It would bo a pity to pass un noticed the symmctricil and grand magnolio, appropriately called the pride of the South. Thousands 01 these yoiing"beau ties rear their attractive forms in the nursery, ready ter trans planting, and in a few years will tiinish their beautiful blooms of .spotless white and rich fragranc , while they, con st i'ute iron! the start, an object on which the eve will rest with pleasure and delight.
