iJSsSs- 1 -"I &- ; o K t A Home and Farm. Agricultural Itemc Canadian farmers claim that six bushels of peas are equal to ten .bushels of corn for fattening hogs, antLthat peas will yield a larger number of bushels per acre than corn. The pork made from, peas is most excellent Never purchase farm utensils because they are cheap. Cheap tools are an .Unmitigated nuis ance: The best workmen in the world carinotmake 3 good job with them. If lis economy to getfthe. best, no matter what the pricemay be. Tor' some-sort of vegetables, as lettuce, -,cress, radishes and others, the Chinese -system of keeping the soil' continuously wet.is the best that can be ad opted It products a crispness in the vegetables that is obtain ed only when there has been no check m the growth. In most cases the best time to topdress grass land Is in August Or September,1 before the fall rains occur, and after the burn ing'heatof summer is past; if then-applied, the rains soak It and carry the fertilizing proper ties directlv to" the grassroots, where it is needed. It has been, recommended, where sheep have been killed by dogs, to skin what the dep redators may leave of their car casses,, and liberally inoculate the defunct mutton with strych nine. Both dogs and foxes are obliged to succumb-to this dose. An -Ohio farmer has quieted many dogs in this way as many as fourin one night . In purchasing' sheep, it is judicious to select those that have been fed on soil inferior to that for which they are designed; and the best symptoms of a healthy condition are redness of the gums and of the skin at the brisket, whiteness and evenness of the .teeth, firmness of the woolsweetness of treatli, and coolness of feet. Put three tablespoonfuls of oatmeal into a quart jug, with or without a small pinch of salt1; mixivlth a lfttle .cold water, and then fill up with hot water, stir ring briskly the while. Let stand to settle, and use either hot or. cold.- Nourishing arid refreshing in cases of sickness, and, the London Agricultural Gazette says, "splendid for harvest -or hay field." Score another for the United States. American agricultural machinery in France has captu red eight out of the eleven prizes offered by the Agricultur al Society for exceptional merit, while the United States agricul tural display in the exhibition has been awarded a diploma of honor, and the United States educational exhibit a gold med al. When a few fowls are confi ned in a small space, they may be encouraged to take needful exercise by suspending a piece of meat just high enough so that they must jump a little to reach it Forking a piece of ground and raking therein grain or scraps, Is another good way to accomplish the like result, and at the same time divert the ac tive minds from such mischief as egg-eating and feather-pluck ing. HOW tO PlOTT. Professor Stockbridge, in an essay on plowing read before the Connecticut State Board of Agriculture said that there are two kinds of soil on every man's farm the agricultural soil and the subsoil. "The agricultural soil may be two inches deep or it may be nine, but it is not twenty feet It is no deeper than, die air can penetrate. If the agricultural is too shallow it may be gradually deepened by Jilting an inch of the subsoil at each plowing, bringing It up to the air and enriching it with ma nure. Our agricultural society committees, by their premiums for smooth shiny fiat furrows, have done the community great harm. Such as oftcnest takes the premium is the very poorest "kind of plowing. The soil is best plowed when it is most thoroughly crushed, twisted and broken with the sod well cover ed. On some kinds of soil I would have the furrows lapped an inch, as the Canadian far mers plow. Let the air and water jiave a chance to circulate beneath the surface. Light lands, however, should have a flat furrow; we wish to make such lands more compact" A correspondent writing to the "New York Tribune, from a good fanning section inPennsylvania, says thut he commenced soiling thirty-five cows in 1875, and now has increased the number to sixty, and during the past year has raised enough fodder, hay, corn and oats, to keep them the entire year without purcha sing anything from of? the farm, which contains but .eight-four acres. Six horses have also been kept on the farm from the .same home-grown grain an"d fodder. InJEngland, it rains on an ay rage'of,l52 to 155 days in. the Old Texans Patsisc Awaj. In spite of our firm conviction that death opens wider the "gates ajar" to" those who are duly prepared to enter the better land, it is sad to observe how many of the adventurous spirits the old pioneer Texans are passing over to the other side. Ina few more brief years there will be none left to. tell the tale of Santa Anna's capture at San Jacinto, or the feelings of those nlio first hearcLthe news of the dreadful massacre at the Alamo in San Antonio. The recent death of Willium Vance, at -San AntoniaH0-31 B. H. Epperson, of Jefferson ; Ccl. W..A. Fort, of Waco; and Ira Mi Freeman, of Navasota, should admonish us all that life here is short at best death is certain therefore every man ought to think less of the world and its poor, perishable goods, and seek to lay up treasures in the spirit .vOrld even while here on earth, by developing every good and noble trait ofthe im mortal soul. The pioneers" above named were not in Texas in the days of '36. still they were all old Texans. Peace to their ashes. Sllddle AEo. As we glide into middle age life the vague dreams . With which we start oiit.grow Into earnest realities, and we find that as youth wanes, the enthu siasm with which we entered upon new pursuits, the buoyan cy ot feeling that kept up our faith and hope in earlier years, grows less as disappointments, failures of our plans, anxieties and crosses that make up the average sum of daily existence, become also our portion, to bear with philosophy, or with fretful impatience, as we school ourselves. Youth has hope, courage, faith to do and brave all things ; middle age sees the earnestness of life and buckles on the armor of work, for, hear ing the "st. ill, sad music of hu manity," he knows it is the call for his broad sympathy and un ceasing grand, -beautiful and sweet out of the days that are given him. i m The Sea Serpent Caught at Last. A young sea serpent has been captured at Van Dieman's Land. The following is the description : "The fish is four teen feet long, fifteen inches deep from the neck to the belly, tapering two inches to the tail, and eight inches in diameter at the thickest place. There are no scales, but the skin is like polished silver, with eighteen dark line and rows of spots run ning from the head to the tail on each side. There is a mane on the neck twenty Inches long, and continues from the head to the tail ; small head, no teeth, pro trustive mouth, capable of being extended four inches, like a sucker; eyes fiat, about the size of a half crown, and liker silver, with black pupils. There are two feelers under the chin, thirty-two inches long. The fish was alive when captured." A Good Advisor. Those men who understand the value of a woman's advice have learned a valuable lesson. It is a wondrous advantage to a man in every pursuit and voca tion, to secure an adviser in a sensible woman. In woman there is at once a subtle delica cy of tact and a placid sound ness of judgment which are com bined to an equal degree in man. A woman, if she is really your friend, will have a sensible regard for your character and repute. She will seldom coun sel you to a shabby thing, for a woman friend alwzys desires to be proud of you. At the same time her constitutional timidity makes her more 'cau tious than her male friend. She therefore seldom counsels you to do an imprudent thing. A man's best female friend is a wife of good sense and heart. Notwithstanding the injur' to the grain crop in Minnesota and Iowa, it is believed that the total wheat crop of the country will reach 400,000,000 bushels. Sunflowers are coming into use in tt.e treeless party of Min nesota, as fuel. The crop on two acres will warm a family all winter and make a roaring fire, too. When a man thinks that no body cares for him, and that he is alone in this cold, selfish world, he would do well to ask himself tin's question; "What have I done to make anybody care for and love me, and to warm the world with faith and generosity ? It is generally the case that those who .complain the, most have done the least. In France, parsnips are com mon Jiorse food. Look for grubs among your peach trees right away;, at the surface of the ground, or just below it, you know. For -killing earth worms .in pots.a watering is recommended often drops ol carbolic acid ad ded to a. pint of water. Grains of Gold. The agitation of thought is the beginning of truth. None have less praise than those who hunt most after it. The best way to condemn bad traits is practising good ones. The main difference between men insignificant and grea't, i5 energy. . X: A quarrel is, often, merely t of a nnsun A lady d ed man he feels Some.1 mjich at they have either. When the world has once got hold o'f a lie, it is astonishing how hard it is to get it out of the world. We pass our lives in regret tiug the past, complaining of the present and Indulging ,false hopes of the future. .. Prefer sense to wit; never seek to be diverting without being useful; let no jest intrude upon good manners. - A superior grafting wax may be made by mixing one pint lin seed oil, she pounds rosin, and one pound beeswax.
