A safe and sure way to avoid the cotton w orm is to catch the miilenvhich lays the eggs. This is easily done by taking a com mon soap or candle box, invert it and nail legs on it so it will stand just above the eotton plant, smear." the inside oi this box with tar or rosin and lard melted together, hang a lantern up in the box so the light will be just below the box. The mil ler will go to the light, and its frantic flight about, the light it will strike the tar and stick last. One female miller thus caught is equivalent to killings hun dreds of worms. Do not poison. The dust of the Paris Green or other poisons used are very in jurios to the cotton, the picker and the pinner and the little dust which falls with the seed renders them unfit for stock food- A dairyman of San Antonio was trying to contract with me for cotton seed last fall but must be assured there had been no pois on used. He said he had three cows poisoned to death the year before by using such , seed. J.M.M. CMcken-Honsts. Every chicken house should have an ample yard of grass run. Never clip the wings of fowls if it can be avoided; it dis figures the birds, prevents the right use of ihe wings, and con sequently they will not thrive well. They should have small trees or grape vines for shade or to scratch under. Ground bone, sulphur, charcoal and cay enne pepper should be admin istered every eight or ten days. Sulphur, pepper and charcoal, a teaspoonful mixed with mor ning feed will contribute much to the health and appearance of the fowls. Fowls shouldlave meat once a week. Cabbages, apples, lettuce, etc all are good; and will more than pay for their cost in the increased supply of eSSs Young chickens should be kept dry and clean, at the same time having pure air. They should have abundence of fresh water. They should not have access to stagnant pools or any Kind ol slops. Some Uses of Charcoal. Charcoal, laid flat while cold on a burn, causes the pain to abate immediately; by leaving- ic on ior an nour tne Dura seems almost healed when the wound is superficial. Strewn over heaps of decomposed pelts, over dead animals, charcoal prevents an unpleascntodor. Powdered charcoal sprinkled over meat that is tainted will sweeten and freshen it Fowl water is purified byjt. It is a great disin fectant, and -sweetens offensive air placed m shallow trays around apartments. It is so veiy porous that it absorbs and con denses gases rapidly. Onecuic inch of fresh charcoal will ab sorb nearly one hundred inches of gasseous ammonia. Char coal forms an excelent poultice for raalignanttvounds and sores. In cases of what is called proud flesh t;t invaluable. It gives no disagreeableodor, corrodes no metal' hurts no texture, injures no color, is a simple and safe sweener and disenfectant A teaspoonful of charcoal, in half a glass of water, often relievs a sick headache. It absorbs the gases and relieves thedistenfed stomach pressing against the nerves which extends from the stomach to the head. It often relievs constipation, pain or heartburn. Gapes In Chickens. This allmentis generally suc cessfully treated by the use of -carbolic acid, which, in the form ora solution is introduced by means of a feather into the -throat of the fouL Take a med ium softfeatherof a wing, pluck the webTrpraboth sides to w ith in an inch of the top. and, after dipping it in a solution ol a scruple of carbolic acid and hn ounce of glycerine, run the feather doun the windpipe, giv ing it three or four turns and .quickly ithdraw it This may be repeated three or four times, each time taking a jiew feather. To prevent other-fouls from be coming similarly infected, as welLas the. worms withdrawn, should be burned. Strew some dry slacked lime around and in the henhouse. Stagnant water and standing pools are a source of great mischief, and especially are such places among the sources whence chickens be come gapy. Preserrrng- Egss. The inquiry is often receive (fl at this office: "What is the best method of preserving eggs for family use?" There is a time inthespring or summer when eggs-are plentiful and cheap. With very little trouble the sur plus may be put down in pickle and kept for months in good condition for table use when eggs arc scarce and Lommand a high price. In the first place gel some stoneware jars, wooden vessels will absorb salt and leak the brine even if tight enough to hold water. Second. Slake one pint of lime and add one pint of salt and enough water to make four gal lons of the mixture. When the pickle gets cold-put the eggs in from day to day as they are laid. If it is desirable to make a larger quantity, the same pro portion must be observed of salt lime and water. Pack without regardto position, whether large or small ends up, or on the sides and they will come in good con dition at the end of eight months. Wash the eggs before pickling unless the shells are clean. Use only newly-laid eggs. Poultry World. Corn ileal And Bran. I consider bran a very good thing for cows, not the coarse bran'withall the fine pollards, etc.,cleaned out, but good bran. And) I consider bean meal and bran a good thing for milk and for dairy cows, as there is strength in it for flesh making as well as milk making. Oats I have understood arc good for milk, but I have never tried them as I do not grow any, nor ever bought any for trial. Trailing wheat ground is good for milk ing properties and cream. I give my cows wheat ground into meal one gallon in the morning with cliff to each; and another at night with chaff again, and hay alter milking, and hay at 10 o' clock and at midday. I find the above meal suits well. Cows must live well if they have any thing to do, the straw yard will not do it. Incer used any thing but meal or bran no ar tificial food such as-cakc. Mine is on a one caj A Card The undersigned haing purchased the interest of Mr. llorner, in Ihe late firm of Wotipka & Horner, takes this method of returning ins thanks to the friends of the firm, and the pubhc generally, for their lib eral patronage, and to solicit a continuance of the same. The very best of these might be had if farmers-would only unite to procure them; and the service from each would be a mere trifle in com parison with the great benefit derived from their use. Male swine and sheep, even of choice breeds, are so cheap now that nearly every farmer can afford to keep one of his own; but when It comes to bulls and stal lions, choice ones arc so high priced, as to make it necessary to form a club for their purchase as they arc beyond the means of most single farmers. Colts and calves, even out of differ ent females, got by superior stallions and bulls, are usually worth, twice and thriee the amount of those bred when both sire and dam are indiffer ent Thccost oi leed for rear ing a good animal is no more, and often less, than that for a poor one, and if, when ready ior market tne lorrner brings twice or thrice the price of the latter, it is a matter of great congratulation to the larmer to his pride as well as to his pocket Be careful that all stal lions arc not only fine form and action, but kind tempered and perfectly sound. Your cowisverry much like your land If you take on or away you must put on, or the result will be not much im provement. A genuine tiling, I think, is superior to an artficial, in which we cannot so well de tect the adulteration if any. If a cow does not get much food, only straw and a bit of hay at the milking, you cannot expect thick cream. If your land gets the straw sold off it, and no good manure put on, how about your heavy crops? I think good home made manure the best and good hpme-ground food for cows the same; at least, I have always found it so, and I have been used to these systems all my life. Take them out ol the vases at night, sprinkle with cold water, and wrap them with cloths made very wet with cold water. The weight of the cloths will not crush the most delicate flowers, while it keeps out the air and prevents their falling to pieces or opening fur ther. Cuttings of many plants strike or root freely in any other moist substance, the soft wooded plants of free growth, such as fuchsias, verbenas and lobelia, root quickly and freely in saw dust, wet sand or sand and wat er, if placed in a brisk tempera ture. Rose cuttings, as well as those of the oleander and many other plants, root freely in bot tler of soft or rain water. The Chinese and Japanese excel all other nationalities in the culture of early vegetables, i This arises from the fact that they use only liquid manures, hence the growth of the plants is most rapid, and as a natural consequence the vegetables are Very brittle and tender. Let tuce and radishes they force rapidly, giving the plants a sprinkling once a day. Tobac co and tea plants arc also treat ed in a like manner. There is no greater mistake than to suppose that land is never too poor to grow beans?
