1 it - THE WEEKLY BANNER. BV RANKIN S. LEVIN. THURSDAY, - - OCT. 7, 18S1. Agcording to the Houston Post, the Adjutant General when applied to for state troops to defend Kendall at his com ing trial in Washington county, said if a criminal cannot be tried in one of the best coun ties m the state without the aid of military force, civil law had best be abolished and martial law declared at once. An Austin special to the Gal veston News says that each time Kendall has been tried at San Saba for killine Brown, frontier troops have been de tiiled for his protection. He is soon to be tried here at Bren ham, but the adjutant general refuses troops saying the volun teer militia here can give pro tection if needed. AUtica special says that senator Jones, of Nevada, has had a long conference with Mr. Conkling. A good deal of gossip was indulged in, but the purpose of the conference did not transpire. It is generally Relieved that the result of the tonference will be an early and important change in affairs at Washington. It seems from last week's ,! Gonzales Inquirer that the edi- ' tor of that paper was attacked by a deputy sheriff for having -n'hVierr! Ins official acts. The official acts of all officers are the legitimate subject of criti cism hv both the oeoole and ! the newspapers and the officer wlio nopes 10 escape cnuuisui should be remarkably circum spect. On Monday the collections for the Garfield monument re ceived at Cleveland amounted to $loyj and the total sum to i?fiira Sst.t. If the reaui- site sum is not subscribed in the very near future the patriot ism of the people will wane and the money to build die monu ment will never be raised. The Americans are not by any means a monument building people. At an examination of the Iron Mountain train robbers at Hope, Arkansas, last Saturday the identity of the train robbers was established beyond any controversy; the men were iden- tiffed by no less than fourteen wn TBa witnesses. J. hey were neld in onds of SSooo each. Gov. hurchill will make an effort to ave a special term of the cir- cia'kcotfrt held for the immedi- f'i ate trial and conviction of the - 4 robbers. - In an editorial on the pro based state bank a dav or two ago. the Banner stated that it would be used for political pur ooses. The San Antonio Ex press referring to the proposi tion says: "It would create S vast political machine through which the state could be plun dered and the people would be powerless to avert the act." It would be impossible to keep politics out of such an institu tion. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that the democrats will elect a president pro tern. of the senate. They will have a majority in that body when they assemble as the newly I elected members from New tVork and New Jersey can not be admitted before the senate organized. If the republi- Jiad a majority under sim- they would Wssesi. F- ','m -va Uncoil and Hour. Some of the papers arc Al ready warning the people to look out for hard times. All kinds of provisions, flout'and hog products are advancing in prices. Bacon at 15 to 16 cents per pound is enough to make the average farmer, who is compelled to buy at these fan cy prices, open his eyes. The papers throughout the state have for many years urged far mers to raise their own pork and it is more than likely that a season's experience in buying bacon at what may reasonably be termed fabulous prices, will at least put many of them to dunking, if not to acting. Hogs are as easily raised as chickens, and if they are all lost once in a while from cholera, drouth or some other accident it is no reason why raising them should be abandoned. If a farmer will take care of three or four head of improved breeds of hogs and and properly fatten them he will be able to make more ba con and lard from them than he would from ten head of the old style razor-back rooters, and every one of the razor backs will cat as much or more food than the good ones. The Banner is fully aware that in .advising farmers it treads on very dangerous and what some farmers regard as sacred ground, they holding that a newspaper has no right to advise farmers, as thefarmer understands hi j bus iness. This may be true in some instances, but not iru all. That hogs have been successfully raised mWashington county.will hardly be denied, so the propo sition holds good if hogs have been raised in the past they can be raised in the future. Expe rience is the only school that imparts knowledge worth hav ing ; the reason is, experience is a school that costs money and sometimes plenty of it, and when one has paid dearly for his learning he knows how to appreciate and value it. Now those who buy bacon this fall and winter and pay 16 cents, a nnund for it", will buv exDeri- ence at the same time, and if they make proper use of their experience they will endeavor the next year to raise their own meat If the money that is sent out of this county every year or flour and bacon could be kept at home, the farmers would all be in a fair way to get rich. The number "'of car loads of bacon and flour jthat are annually received at Bren ham would astonish any pne who had not given the matter serious thought All this ba con and flour has to be paid for out of the proceds of the cotton crop. Docs it pay to sell cot ton at 10 cents a pound and buy bacon at 16? Tnc-San-Antonio Light de fends the character of Mr. Ar thur and says that his removal from the New York custom house by Mr. Hayes was for political reasons and not for dishonesty. In this connection it may not be amiss to renjark that there is entirely -00 much disposition to abuse opposite parties. Neither party can see any honesty in the other and when a political canvass is in progress both parties become wholly unscrupulous in the charges they bring against their opponents. If't wert possible for a man to lay asie'e all pol itical prejudices sad like a disinterested view rf candidates before the people n a strictly partizan race it wuld certainly seem to him thatthe most un principled and rscally men had lected a. scanaara ocar- pns conicnaing nage. rair- atter what jth, will this ijy "SKOiaiSJ &ism& iS5SSB-; mm HOODLUMS. iyThe meaning of the word, r rowdyism, is pretty generally understood, but in the past few years a newer and much more expressive word has been in troduced from the Pacific coast, hoodlum. The hoodlum com bines all the bad qualities that belong to the rowdy and in ad dition to them adds all of those belonging to the loafer. There is frequent cases where work ing men act the part of the rowdy, but your genuine hood lum, is above work, he would consider it a disgrace to have any ligitimatc or hon est employment. His highest ambition is to obtain possession of a six-shooter and he trusts to his"-shapc and his wits for the balance; if he can catch an in nocent youth or man from the country he will ring in on him, act the part of his confident friend, treat him to a drink out of a private flask which he car rier in his pocket, carefully pre pared and flavored for the pur pose. The countryman is then steered into some deadfall where he is perhaps induced to bet on some put up game and has about as much chance of winning as a healthy and sane duck" has of committing suicide by drowning. If the game docs not do its work the pocket flask never fails; the victim finds himself asleep on the street without any money and is ar rested for being drunk and down. The hoodlum makes his living by robbing such as those described abovc.or he may .sometimes become a little bold er and resort to highway rob bery, or mask himself and rob innocent and unsuspecting farmers by calling on them at night The hoodlum is a cow ard at heart and seldom attacks any one on a fair and equal footing, his object is always to get the drop. Nearly every community has its hoodlums; they fire to be seen Dn the streets, by day and at night can be found at the deadfalls or about tne different houses of prostitution, where with six shooter in hand they act the part of the blustering bully, and not only assist in robbing such countrymen and railroaders as may happen to visit those places, but to pu: the women up to robbery and afterwards themselves rob the 'women. The hoodlum is a terror to all peaceable citizens; his ways are both evil and dark, he is not at all likely to confront anyone, but would have no hesitation to shoot at him from around a cor ner or behind a fence. An almost universal complaint comes from all parts of the state of the increased lawless ness on the part of characters, like those of whom a pen-pic-ture is presented. Horse steal ing is increasing at a rate that make the owning of a horse absolutely dangerous. Within a radius often miles of Brcn ham since last Saturday night there has becnjicrliaps half a dozen -horses stolen. The horses did not steal themselves, neither were they stolen by green hands at the business; a stolen horse must ic carried from thirty to fifty or one hun dred miles before it can be dis- posee of with any degree of safety to the thief. If the Ban jjlr is not very much mistaken horse-stealing, hoodlumism, highway robbery and masked visitors to farm houses at meat arc all very intimately connect ed. A little good detective service in the neighborhoods where horse stealing and rob bery are- common would, no doubt, result in t!C arrest of parties whom perhaps a portion of the community would never have suspected. It behoves the officers of every neighbor hood where hoodlumism, rowdyism, robbery and pistol shooting is carried on to bestir themselves and arrest the of fenders no matter who they may proVe to be, nor what their gmily connections arc. vesfan Civilian rpfpr- : that upwards of pea contributed be benefit of "She is now cd, having ktnd it is rc&fiSre&MSES EUITORI IL0TES.
