grass. Wo Lave also found Cana
da thistles harmless in soiling
crops. Being cnt when tender and
sucrnloni, they were oaten up
clean, arid they disappeared after
tho first season. Thoy are very
troublcsomowhcn allowed to ripen
bat easily managed when cut at the
rishl time. There aro fow weeds
lhnt can stand porsistent cutting
when green, and soiling furnishes
tho best means for clearing fields

the following treatment to make a
horse's mano and tail grow, and to
prevent their falling out: "Bob
bing tho mano and tail usually re
suits from an unhealty condition of
the skin, which, in most cases, is
produced by neglect oi grooming
or by bad Jood, or by nny sudden
chanfo of diet from bad to good.
Occasionally, however, it appears
in stables whero grooming and
food arc unqnestionably good
.Damaged oats or hay are very
ready causes for this annoying af-
lcetion. in every case, tberelore,
the food should bo carefully exam
ined, lour horses, on coming into
stables, suffer from irritation of
the skin, probably from chango of
diet. Horses recovering from fever
frequently loso a largo portion ot
their hair irom tho mane and tail
In the latter case it seems to arise
from an impoverished stato ol
blood. Jn regard to treatment, if
anj' positive cause, such as damag
ed (nod, or neglected grooming,
can be ascertained to have cxistod,
measures, of course, must bo taken
to rectify it. Without such amend
ment local treatment will not be of
much avail. Tbo local troatment
consists in dressing tho skin with
cqnal parts of mcrccrio! ointment
and sifl.so;p, made lotos lather
with hot water, and applied by
means of a stiff hair brush. The
new hair will grow rapidly after
this application. Besides the
abovo local romedics, it will be
necessary to act on tbo system gen
erally by a change of diet; green
food, which by means of its laxa
tive qualities lessens tho irritabili
ty of the skin, should bo given. A
bran mash with flvo grains of arse
nic daily, in addition to tbo usual
food, will exert a beneficial influ
ence on tbo skin.

nal, Starkvilie, Miss., says: A
prominent citizen of this place wbo
owns a farm without any valuablo
improvesments upon it, except
foncing which is located within a
convenient distance of tbo Miss. A.
& M. College, remarked in our
psesencc tho other day. tbat now
tho creamery had proven such a
grand success, ho would hold his
land at 830 an aero. Another far
mer and prominent citizen said not
long ago, that by reason ot tho of
fset of tho creamery, ho wonld say
that 20 an acre wonld not buy his
farm. Either of theso farms could
bave been bought, before the es
tablishment ot the creamery for
less than $12 per acre .
An improved method ol tanning
namely, with 6oap and oil, to
gether with carbolic acid has been
brought to nolico by an Australian
inventor. Tho skins, which have
boen limed in tho ordinary man
ner, alto haired and" prepared il
for the production of solo leather,
aro placed in a tin bath consisting
of a mixture of ten gallons of wa
ter, in which 200 pounds of soap
are dissolved, and containing ono
gallon of carbolic acid, in which
tbo skins aro left until they havo
becomo converted into leather.
This procoss, ills asserted, may be
considerably accelerated by adding
a pint of frosh carbolic acid to the
tanning fluid from timo to timo.
For a softer leather tho raw, limed
and haired skins aro for ono or
two days placed in a mixturo of
four parts carbon bisnlphido and
one of carbolic acid, and then
washed.
