A large addition is being made to tho Veal Station college, Parker county. The .Mexican National is now widening the gauge on the Corpus Christi branch. Prospects for fine crops in Clay county this season are getting brighter every day. The Drake murder case has been on a change of venue removed from Hillsboro to Waco. A great many of the farmers around Luling are going to try a crop of castor beans this year. At the dedication of the Iowa Park Baptist church $G00 was raised and the church freed from debt. Beeville will have an oil mill that will cost 8125,000 in less than twelve months, according to the Daily Picayune. The Bennett brothers of Fort Collins went on to the Chicago market last week with a consign ment of lambs, which brought 5.30. A big harvest may be expected in Burleson county this year. A great deal of new land is being put in cultivation and the season be gins most auspiciously. Work has commenced on the Keller, gneiss quarry, two miles west of Cisco. As soon as opera tions get fairly under way a large force will be employed. The legislative committee were royally entertained at Aransas Har bor on the 5th, none of the 250 guests being allowed to pay for a single thing they ordered. Cotton and corn aie up and do ing nicely sajs the Laredo Times. The acreage of cotton planted this year is about fifteen times as large as that of the last season. There will be over 4000 acres of cotton planted in Wilbarger coun ty this season. The seed has been gratutiously distributed to farmers who obligated themslve's to plant it. City Marshal Iglesias of Larado has received a laige quantity of fresh roots of the ramie plant, which he is distributing gratis to those who de sire to plant and experiment with the growth of the ramie in the vicin ity of Laredo. The wife of Christian Beuman, a Galyeston tailor eloped recently with Emile Peterson. Each left a husband and wife respectively. The deserted husband is minus $200 in money and a child two years old. Peterson left an invalid wife desti tute and three months arrearage on house rent. Farmers of Wichita county have their spring plowing well along and all the testimony is of a favorable character and points to an excellent, crop and rich harvest. The state ment recently made that Wichita county will make the largest crop in 1S91 over any year in her history seems possible of realization. Profit-sharing between owners and employes wherever adopted has proved of great benefit to all con cerned. Men pecuniarily interested in the success of their employers do not strike, are more deligent, more saving and economical in the use of materials, more careful in the use of tools and machinery. Mills in the April Forum, show that the census of 1890 is not correct. The children of school age are enumer ated by officers appointed under the authority of the State authority of the State governments. Their num ber is annually reported at Wash ington, and from the rate of annual increase of those within given ages the total population of each State can be closely calculated. I am in formed by the Commissioner of Education that there were in Texas inlSSO, 311,567 children between the ages of S and 1G years; that the children between those ages in creased between 1880 and 1890 at the rate of S6.4 per cent., and that the population of the State in 1890, if the whole increased in the same ratio, should hayo been 2,966,000. The census gives us 2,235,513. Here is a loss of about 700,000.
