STATE NEWS.
The corn crop is remarkably
.heavy in Falls county.
New wheat is selling at 60
cents a bushel in Fort Worth.
Houston will hold her Volks
f est on the 4th of July this year.
Rockdale now has telephone
connection with the outside
world.
Goliad has sent a number of
fine exhibits to the Nashville Ex
position. Some cattle in Hidalgo coun
ty are afflicted with a disease re
sembling rabies.
Houston is to have one of the
colored normal schools, and is
ihankful for that.
The late Harris county grand
jury returned into the criminal
court 57 indictments.
The sheriff's -association will
hold their next annual meeting
at Dallas, July 12th and 13th.
Three orphan childden have
suddenly disappeared from the
.State Orphan home at Corsicana.
Several persons have been
drowned while bathing in the
Gulf at Galveston this season.
Boll worms 'have already
Tuade their appearance in some of
the v cotton fields in Lamar
county.
The motion of the Waters
Pierce Oil" Company for a new
trial was promptly over-ruled at
Austin.
-"Will Schubert, while roping
cattle on the prairie near Taylor
last Saturday, was thrown from
iis horse and killed.

ed at Wharton for participation
in the murder of the Crocker

Capt. Charles E. Woodard,
an old resident of. Harrisburg,
committed suicide Friday byj
-cutting his throat with a butcher
inife.
The Lockhart Register says
there will be 2,500,000 bushels of
corn raised in Caldwell county
ibis year, requiring 314,500 feet
-of lumber to crib it.
The finest oat crop ever
made in the vicinity -of Kosse,
Limestone county, has heen
harvested. Few fields produced
less than fifty bushels to the acre,
-while seventy-five bushels was
common.
Jim Beck has been jailed at
Giddings charged with killing
Alex Jones' 13-year-old son with
a target rifle.. Both are colored.
Beck, claims the killing to have
"been an accident.
Eben R. Berdowe, a sheep
man of Presido county, arrived
here Tuesday, and said that two
-of his herders have rediscovered
the herd of wild buffaloes that has
heen reported from time to time
during the four years to be feed
ing in almost impenetrable val
leys bordering on the Rio Grande.
He states that the herd is now in
the extreme southern part of
Buchel county, and that it num
bers between seventy and eighty
head, including several calves.
P. L. and Wm. Brady of
Hearne claim to be the original
inventors and patantees of
the roller cotton compress,
having secured patents in 1888
covering the principle of com
pressing a cylindrical bale of
-cotton, receiving the bat between
four rollers as it comes from the
condenser. They use no core to
wind the bale on, the bale being
formed between four rollers,
making the center as solid as
other portions. They are making
preparations to organize a stock
company and will begin to man
ufacture them and expect to sell
o the ginners. '

The Waters-Pierce oil plant
at Terrell burned last Friday
night, consuming a thousand gal
lons of oil. Both ends were blown
out of two large storage tanks.
Dr. R. H. Jones, who shot
and killed Captain W. G. Veal at
Dallas several years ago, and
whose case was reversed and re
manded by the court of criminal
appeals, has been admitted to
bail in the sum of S5000, which
was readily given.
A state shooting tournament
is to be held at Belton on July
14th and loth, which will be at
tended by some of the best shots
in the state.
Col. W. G. Britt, of Sherman,
dug 647 bushels of Irish potatoes
from two acres of land, bringing
S194.10 at 30 cents a bushel,
which goes to show that our
north Texas people have no ex
cuse for buying potatoes raised
in other states.
-Thorough tests haA'e been
made at the Texas experiment sta
tion to determine the best propor
tion in Avhich to mix cotton seed
mealand hulls forjfattening steers.
These experiments show that one
pound of meal to five or six
pounds of hulls produce the best
results and is cheapest.
