It is a very toothsome bird, and is eagerly bought by marketmen and restaurant keepers, and as it does not enjoy the protection which the law gives to most other kinds of game birds, it is hunted at all times of the year, and especially when the other birds may not be shot. But not only is the meadow lark a good game bird, he is one of the best friends of the agricul turist and fruit grower, as he is one of the leaders among the insectivorous birds, being especially fond of cutworms, and his destruction » likely to be at tended with great damage to the fanners. A San Francisco paper calls for a revi sion of the game laws for the protection of the lark.—Picayune. A Singular Case. The New York Press says that the Massachusetts penitentiary contains a remarkable character in the person of a youug forger. This prisoner has not only refused a pardon, asserting that justice demanded that he should serve out his sentenoe, but during his impris onment he has earned several thousand dollars by working over time, all of which has been given to the victims of his crime. Lake, mentioned in the Reveille, was a shock to his relatives and friends in this community. He was born and grew almost to manhood in this neigh borhood and here he entered the army in Capt Barnes' company, afterwards commanded by Capt. Carnahan, once a resident of Port Gibson. Mr. Lake was one of a limited number of Missis sippians who, after the war, were espec ially honored by Emperor Louis Napo leon with a permit to enter the Nation al Military Academy of Tours, France. He served a short while in the ranks at that training school, having seen much of military life in our civil war, which naturally restricted his educational ad vantages. From there, by the advice of friends, he went to the Republic of Switzerland, where he secured a pri vate tutor for several years, himself re maining with the family of our minis ter to that country, and devoting his entire time to his studies. Mr. Lake's modest demeanor was the crowning beauty ot his young life, and it was his most intimate friends who realized how well he spent his time. Ilis after life was devoted to those near and dear to him, nor did he ever turn a deaf ear to the needy. The well-merited compli ment tendered him by the citizens of Jefferson in electing him their county treasurer proved their confidence was not misplaced, so well did he perform his duty.
