Port Gibson, Dec. 7, 1908: To Editor of the Reveille: I am a cotton planter and 1 have tried to gather information from various cotton growers when did the boll weevil appear in Claiborne County. I am convinced that he appeared in our county in the fall of 1907 or I should say the Sep tember of that year, though only found by the government experts on the Presbyterian Plantation field of J. J. Mann of this year. D. Humphreys of Ashland planta tion states that he is satisfied that they were on liis farm last year and that they were unusually act September -to killing May be the tornado of more. ive since frosts. April 24th brought should I believe that the boll Why weevil was us in 1907? Why? be cause I gathered only 33 bales of cotton in 1907 and in 1906 over a hundred, and in 1908 will probably reach 75 bales of cotton, though the cloud-burst of July 31st de stroyed fully 75 bales of cotton for I observed during the whole me. of the month of August that not a bloom was to be seen in my cot ton field, which is conclusive proof that boll weevils did the added work of dest niction with overflows. The cotton plant looked beautiful, green and rank during August, and commenced blooming again in September—the second growth having increased . the industry of the boll weevils. Every insect in nature lias a parasite, and when there is no parasite, the ndxt best remedy to destroy that enemy when man fails to give the boll weevil a disease like the chinch bug in 1891 was given a disease, for the chinch bug promised to be as great a destroyer of corn to the corn belt as the boll weevil is the cotton area of Texas, Tennessee and Mis sissippi. I think we will be better farmers by producing more cotton like the weevil districts of Texas where they gathered 700,000 bales of cotton more than before the boll weevil.—Optime Theodore Howard ITCaleb LL. D. Hon. Carleton Hunt of New Or leans recently delivered an address of fifty years experience in practice at the Bar before the Louisiana Bar Association, and paid the fol lowing beautiful tribute to Theo dore Howard McCaleb, Dean of the University of Louisiana Law School, who died in Claiborne Coun ty in April 1864. "Theodore Howard McCaleb, professor for many years of admir alty and international law, was a graduate of Yale College, and Doc tor of Laws. He was fitted for his position by long experience as United States District Judge in New Orleans, by his attach ment to the institutions and to the jurisprudence of our com mon country, by # being master of many graces, in the style of writing, by his love for the classics and belleîs lettres, and by the sym pathies of a warm and generous nature, which drew the young to ward him, and won the affections of those he taught. As a boat helps her course after the stroke which has propelled her has been removed, I seem, even now. years after his death, to feel the influence of his presence. The sound of his voice seems to linger in my ears.* I take the opportunity to say to his kinsman (whom I see here to day}-) That I shall always remem ber Judge McCaleb; That bis peo ple must always appear to me to have been mine also; and when, in the trying scenes of the civil war, he was overtaken by sorrows, these have proved to be my sor rows as well as his; ♦Cicero. fE.
