War on the Undesirables Still Waged by the Police City Detectives Newnam and Stowe held the boards in the police court this ' morning and much of the time taken up with cases on the docket was the result of arrests made by them. In the major ity of cases, transfers to the county court were entered, although some stiff fines were imposed against defendants who faced the court of charges of vagrancy. Willie Williams and A. J. Love, two negroes, charged with attempted burg lary, were ordered transferred, while Fred Chinders, another negro, charged with vagrancy, was fined $25. The tes timony against Chinders was to the ef-- feet that he was too fond of sleeping alongside of work instead of really working. Jesse Johnson, a nnegro lad, charged with vagrancy, whose facial features were adorned with a mustache, aston ished the court officials by. telling them that he was but 15 years old. Un der the new juvenile law, the police court has no jurisdiction in eases wherj, the defendant is not 16 years old. ‘ ‘ These young men who come before this court to answer charges seem as bad as some of the chauffeurs of San 1 Antonio,” declared Prosecutor DeWitt, when the negro made the startling declaration. “Many of San Antonio’s chauffeurs, no matter how fast they operate their machines, always claim they are not exceeding eight miles an hour, the limit allowed by ordinance ■■ ■ ' WHY NOT TRY?
