DOCTORS CLOSE
THEIR MEETING
HERE JOYOUSLY
Christen New Roof Garden
With Program of Impromptu
Talks and Vaudeville.
IMPORTANT PAPERS READ
Closing Session of Conference
Followed By Smoker and
Good Fellowship Time,
i The smoker and entertainment given
by the Fifth District Medical associa
tion last night on the roof garden of
the St. Anthony Annex was a fitting
close of the semianrual session held
in this city yesterday. The occasion
was also memorable in that it opened
to the public the roof garden.
More than two hundred physicians
from all sections of the country and
some from Mexico, and many of them
distinguished, laid aside their profes
sional cares and became “one of the
boys’’ for a few hours.
Dr. A. R. Bowman of Uvalde, who on
other occasions concerning the Fifth
District Medical association is the pres
ident. but who was master of ceremo
nies last night, announced that the
speaking would be impromptu and that
formalities would be dispensed with.
From an improvised platform the
speakers and vaudeville artists headed
by Lloyd Spencer of the Royal theater,
kept the doctors constantly entertain
ed and the time slipped by quickly.
Dr. C. E. R. King was called upon
and entertainingly told how the medi
cal profession had changed in fifty
years.
Dr. SpoVn of Corpus Christi also told
of the old days and how great was
south Texas. Dr. R. H. L. Bibb of Sal
tillo, Mexico, said Mexico was a long
way from San Antonio when he went
there, and he sketched the develop
ment and changes that have occurred
since. He said Mexico was becoming
Americanized. Further, he said, there
were many able native doctors in the
republic, well taught theoretically and
practically. Tn conclusion, he praised
San Antonio and was surprised to seo
how progressive the city had become
since his last visit.
The entertainment of the State Med
ical society at Dallas was the theme
of the talk by Dr. John T. Turner of
Dallas.
Lloyd C. S-oeneer told funny stories .
in both the Irish and Chinese dialects I
and furnished the medicos several good
laughs. He put on a most pleasing high
class vaudeville show during the even
ing and each artist was repeatedly en
cored.
The American Singing Four furnish
ed the feature and they gave their best
songs and melodies. The four —Chas.
McDonald. Frank Thompson. Harold
Thomas and Ed Mumford entertained,
a large party in the Old Dutch room af
ter the smoker until midnight.
Littl? Miss Gladys Graham opened
the program by rendering two eatchv
songs and sang “Lonesome” to the
delectation of the stag gathering ns an
encore. Miss Mabel Elaine was heail-
Hv apnlauded for her clever dancing.
Miss Sarah Branson, vocalist, was en
cored repeatedly and sang “I Love
Thee” in a most pleasing manner.
Two valuable papers were read be
fore the members of the association nt
yesterday aJCternoon’s session: “The
Surgical Anatomy of the Rectum, with
Special Reference to Resection for
Cancer.” was ably treated by Dr Wil
liam Keeler of Galveston, in Hs ad
dress.
“Joint Surgery, from a Pra.tition
er's Standpoint,” by Dr. John B. Mur
phy of Chicago, was a paper that con
tained many interesting topics to the
general practitioner and surgeon.
Dr. E. V. DePew. secretary of the
association, cannot be given too mud,
credit for the success of the first‘of)
the semi-annual meetings.
The next meeting of the association !
will be in the fall either in November
or December, at which time tjic election
of officers for ensuing year will be
held. .

AT THE EMPIRE.
One of the many features the Em
pire'this week, where Isabelle Lowe
and her players are presenting “The
Cabin Boy,” is the singing by the
quartette composed of H. Guy Wood
ward, Ted Woodruff, Lee Harvey and
Harry Bewley. “The Cabin Boy,” al
though a semi-melodrama, is pleasing
good-sized audiences nightly. Some
very dramatic climaxes are reached and
Isabelle Lowe as Margie Chaster, the
kidnaped child, bootblack and stow
away, always drops in at the proper
time.
Specialties are being introduced dur
ing the play and between acts by Miss
Lowe and Mr. Woodward. Miss Lowe’s
rendition of the song “Gee. But I Feel
Blue,” is fine, ns she is possessed of
a remarkably sweet voice, adapted to
songs of that description. The bill of
“The (Jabin Boy” will run for the bal
ance of the week with the usual mati
nee Saturday.
ROYAL.
-
The American Singing Four is prov
| ing a magnet which is drawing big
I crowds to the Royal this week. The
“boys” are the most delightful sing
ers and the comedy of Eddie Mumford
introduced all through the act. bright
ens every part of it.
Mabel Elaine is making a decided hit
with her clever dancing, and dainty La
Belle Valenka makes her six bears Jo
nil sorts of interesting tricks. Mati

STORM AREA IN SECTION
WEST OF MISSISSIPPI
A storm area covers the entire region
west of the Mississippi, says the local
weather man. Allen Buell, of the Unite i.
States weather bureau, ami the pros
pects for rain are increasing, although
there is no precipitation in the entire
legion covered by the storm aren.
A severe local wind and rain storm
was felt at Nashville, and that, with
ra : n in scattered districts, was the only
disturbance in the peaceful spring con
ditions.
The prevailing temperature through
out the United States is higher than it
was yesterday, and ideal warm, spring
weather prevails. This will probably
change to cooler weather as soon as the
storm area passes, declares the major.

Meet to See If Agreement
Can Be Reached.
The striking plumbers of San Antonio
and the master plumbers, who have.not
!as yet signed the closed shop agree
i ment, met this afternoon at 2 o’clock at
ithe'Trades Council hall, for the purpose
iof discussing the situation and seeing
) if an agreement could not be arrived nt
;by which the strike could be ended. It
! is understood the mhster plumbers will
) concede the right of a closed shop, but
I wil lask the plumbers to modify certain
) sections of the rules, in which appren
tices. car fare and other questions are
invoiced. Members of the Plumbers and
Gas Fitters’ union are jubilant oVtr the
outlook this afternoon, and say that it
really means the end of the strike which
has been on in the city since March 15,
and in which over 100 men have been
effected.
Following the conference of the •om

। of ratifying the action of the commit
tee and to officially declare ‘the strike
at an end.
ROCK ISLAND GETS
CONTRACT BY RUSE
Fort Worth, Tex., March 23.—Ths
railroad offices here today learned that
the Kock Island, by a business coup, linn
secured all contracts from the big meat
packers for nil their carrying between
Chicago and Omaha, which is a highly
profitable haul. The roads raised the
rates between Chicago and Omaha, but
the Rock Island notified the packers it
would carry their products to a station
opposite Omaha at the old rates and
thereby won the business.
