Eminently characterized by cool In

SIX WEEKS OF ORATORY AND EV

COCKE MAKES BIG PROTEST
Does Not Want Investigation to End
Without tho Testimony and Some
Other Members So Vote
Austin Tex After four wecks ot
taking lestimoni following two weeks
of fervid oratory first in tho houses
of tho Legislature and then ln tho
meetings of tho investigating commit
tees tho investigation of United States
Senator Joseph W Dalley camo to
an end at E oclock Trlday afternoon
Of tho house commltteo only Messrs
McGregor and Jenkins voted against
closing tho Investigation Thc > in
slstcd upon sending tho sub committee
abroad to get tho testimony ot II Clay
Pierce The senate commltteo tied
upon the proposition only six members
being present Senators Skinner Sen
ter and Green oted against closing
the Investigation without an effort to
got Pierces testimony Senator Green s
rlfeht to vote he being tho chairman ol
the Senate commltteo was contested
by Senators Loonei Brachfleld ano
Stone but Senator Green Insisted that
the fact of his being chairman did not
deprlvo him of his right to vote and
he held the committee tied There
fore a decision in tho mattei was
postponed until Saturday liilt ft seems
improbable that tho result will be oth
ei than tho determination leached by
tho house committee At Saturday s
session tho committee will also at
tempt to Investigate tho responsibility
foi having a requisition sent to tho
Governor of Mlswuil for H Clay
Pierce Mr Jenkins Insisted upon this
declailng that no member of tho com
mlttee would acknowledge that ho was
responsible for It The committee will
also decide what thoy will do about
letting Mr Cockos protest against
closing tho investigation go ln the rec
ord and then it will map out a pro
gram for making up tho lecord and re
port of the committee
The transcript of tho testimony Is
nearly completed It will mako not less
than 750000 words enough to fill noar
ly 2000 pages in tho legislative jour
nal It Is questionable whether this
recoid can bo printed in time for use
in connection with action upon tho re
port of the commltteo It Is under
stood that tho report will bo expurgat
ed of the specphes made during tho In
i estlgation and there may be some ex
cision of unimportant testimony by
agreement but some members of tho
committee as least will object to ma
terial reduction of tho record
Some of the members of tho commit
tee think at least a week will elapse be
fore thoy can piesent their report to
the two houses In Just what form
this report will bo can not bo foretold
It Is said that some of the members
of the commltteo are averse to mak
ing any recommendations but think
it will be sufficient for them to report
the testimony and their finding ot
facts
