ABOUT
Insurance Gasoline Stoves
There is a great difference In Gas
oline Stoves. Some manufacturers lay
claim to public favor on account of
the simplicity of the burner, or the
style of the stove. All of them mak?
an attempt to provide stoves with
safety attachments, such as lay down
tanks, which shuts off the supply of
gasoline when you fill the tank. BUT
NONE OF THEM GO FAR ENOUGH.
To give absolute safety an Automatic
Device is necessary.

ton is under it. Anyhow he always
wears one and telling him that they
don’t become him doesn’t have any
effect.
Outside of being county attorney,
T. J. Newton is noted principally for
riding a big black horse and wearing
ing a big silk hat in carnival pa
rades. *
Everybody calls him "Tom.” He
is about 5 feet 10 inches, of blond ap
pearance and when set in his ways “ij
sot as the dickens.” He has a weak
ness for going fishing and a fondness
for telling big stories about his catches
when he returns.
Tom was born and raised in San
Antonio. His father was S. G. New
ton, a Confederate veteran and a pio
neer lawyer of San Antonio. Tom
was educated at St. Mary’s college
and at the Texas state university,
from which he graduated in law in
1895. He acted as assistant city at
torney under Mayor Campbell and in
1908 was elected county attorney. He
was re-elected to the office last fall.
Mr. Newton is 34 years old and is
a baseball enthusiast. He is married
and has three children. He almost
always wears a smile an* has a bluff
manner of greeting, but that doesn’t
indicate by any means that he is a
bluffer.

15 THREATENED
Washington, April 3. —There were
two developments of highest import
ance in the tariff situation in the house
late this afternoon.
The ways and means committee
voted to recommend a number of
amendments to the Payne bill, several
of the leading schedules being involved
in the proposed changes.
A red hot insurgent movement devel
oped when 26 stand pat republican
members of the house held a meeting
and formulated demands upon the
ways and means committee for a high
er schedule on several articles. They
declared that unless their request was
granted they would vote against the
program of the leaders on Monday.
This revolt has confused all the
plans of the leaders and tilled them
with anxiety as to their ability to con
trol enough votes to secure the adop
tion of the rule to fix the date when
the final vote on the Payne bill shall
be taken. Several of them, after the
meeting, berated the insurgents, charg.
ing them with disloyalty, threatening
serious damage to the party. Every
possible effort will be made tomorrow
to round up the objectors in order that
the house organization may be by a
majority when the fight comes up on
Monday. If the canvass should show
a majority to be lacking, it would be
necessary to defer the introduction of
the rule. *
Amendments proposed by the demo
cratic members of the committee, and
voted down, were to place lumber, coal,
zinc ore, all iron and steel products,
leather and oil on the free list and to
reduce the tariff on gloves and hosiery.
