Astlif primary election approaches it is well to look into the character of the men offering for state offices that we may intelligently decide be tween the candidates for the various office- t<» Ik* filled. The integrity of the .slate government depends in a large measure upon the character of the men who admisiter its affairs. The respect in which a state official is held I)}- the people is measured by the ability of the official, the purity of his life, the manliness of his pur pose arid tie- honesty of his public acts. The w elfare'«if the stati· and her good name depend to no small extent upon the character of her of ficials nd ι he administration of her Jaws. The highest duty of citizen ship, th< h fore, is the selection of men of character and ability to» fill these π ■ i'Mtisihle positions. In Tex.ts these officials are always democrats and the only way by whic ι '..'very citizen can give voice to his \ ie\vs and choice i* by taking ! part in tie ri maries called to se-i Sect these iieialβ and to give ut-1 feram· in th policies which in the jndguieii of th.· party will best sub .S Ο Γ V > fil·'· s u tf·. in tiie Governor'» race there is but on · choice·. "While there are two earn i-.l■>'*-s few voters recognize in Judge (; uhbs' candidacy little «*ise than the gratification of a delu Kion. Congressman Lanham will be the nominee, atul we believe the in to sts of t he state will be safe in liis hands. This paper has already expressed its pieference for Senator Neal for lieutenant governor, believing him the best fitted man for the place. While there are two candidates for for attorney general the present in cumbent appears to he getting all the instructions. He has made the etute a good official, is not an office eeeker or politician. The state could ■doubtless do no better than to re turn ('has. K. Beii to the head of its law department. The raie for treasurer and comp » good the manner in which ϋ which have already held tt arles are in»tfucting for him It 'evident that the bank failure of t year left no taint on hi* name of •cord. Col. Lore is serving his first rm as comptroller and hie admin stration of that office gives no rea son for supplanting him with a po litical pie hunter. Col. Love is a ■ood màn to retain in that office. The only other contest of impor ce is that of railroad commis fiHifcer. Apart from the governor ship, this is probably the most im portant office to be filled. Judge | Reagan, who has been chairman of | the commission ever since its or ganization twelve years ago , is to retire. To filles place is no mean undertaking. MwV gentleman are contesting for the honor. Mr. Col quitt, of Kaufman county; Mr. Hornsby, of Travis county and Mr. Curtis, of Hell county. Mr. Cur tis was a candidate two years ago and was defeated. Mr. Colquitt lias been a student of railroad matters for several years. He served four years in the siate senate and is 110 doubt quite familiar with state af fairs. Mr. Hornsby is a Texas pro duet, born 011 the banks of the Colorado river and reared 111 the shadow of the capitol. He has been county clerk of Travis county ] for a number of years, and it Is 110 stretch of the imagination to say that no more popular gentleman re sides in its confines. He is a gen tleman of splendid address, a busi ness man of fine ability and would lend dignity and strength to the of fice. In the opinion of the Light Mr. Colquitt or Mr. Hornsby will make the state a good commis sioner, and the county will make no mistake in instructing for either of them. In our recent state campaigns there has been a tendency to spend entirely too much money. Workers are imported into a county to jolly and cajole the voters, who too often have no other interest in their can didate than the salary paid them for their labor. The right kind of American voter will make up his ticket without outside interference and when in doubt as to the capaci ty or fitness of any candidate j He will seek information from some j j neighbor or friend who has no other j 1 interest in the election than the se- , lection of good men for office. The expenditure of money in state cam paigns has come to he almost a scandal m this state, and it must he checked, either by the good sense of the voters in rebuking those candi dates who resort to its use, or by some legistation that will fix pri mary ejections on a certain date throughout the state. A true democrat's democracy is like Caesar's wife's virtue. Some men starve on hope when thev might g<-t fat on hustle. Some people take oil their religion with their Sunday clothes. Too many men mistake official commissions for license to steal. A man never Ix-gins to learn until lie has forgotten most of what he only thought he knew. There's something to he said on both sides of a question, and usual ly the most is said on the wrong side. What this country needs is fewer democrats for regularity's sake and more democrats for conscience sake. Some men would trade the richest painting that hangs in their homes for the print of a baby's hands upon their walls. Washington is rightly named "The City of Magnificent Dis tances." The congressmen are so far away from the people that some of them cannot see across the dis tance.—Ex, A Grateful Mother Writes About the Rescue of Her Child. Paine's Celery Compound Triumphed After the Failures of Physicians. Mrs. Tillman, of 191 Redmond st., New Brunswick, N. J., grateful for the rescue of her little boy from suffering· and death, writes as follows: "I have used Paine's Celery Com pound for our little boy. He had been under the doctor's care for five months, but did not seem to pet much better. The physician said the child had spinal trouble. He is .'t years old, ami was obliged to creep on his hands and knees and was too weak to sit up long at a time. We bought a bottle of Paine's Celery Compound, and before it was half gone, we saw a bit' change in tin· boy. He is now real fat and strong, and can walk all around the house, and has red, plump cheeks. Paine's Celery Compound cured him.'" In the face of such testimony, who can deny the fact that Paine's Celery Compound restores to strength, vigor and new life? Hundreds of such letters as Mrs. Tillman's are on file for the inspection of doubters. When your children are weak, run down, nervous, fretful, despondent, have loss of appetite, slow circula tion of blood, give them Paine's Celery Compound for a week or two, and note well thecheering results in returning health and vigor. We strongly urge the immediate us.· of tlie great medicine for all sickly and weak boys and girls. ΠΙΙΜΠΜΠ nvcc True to name ud color UlAITiUlfU U I Co Nothing can equal them Special Train.
