Farnham Submits a Proposi tion to Waxahachie Citizens. Last night about thirty or forty representative basiness men of the city met at the courthouse to confer with Mr. F. H. Farnham, represent ing the I'nion Traction Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, relative to a proposed plan of constructing a! freight and passenger electric rail- ! way line from Denison to Waco by way of Dallas and Waxahachie. The meeting was called to order. by Mayor Η. E. Pickett, who was ; subsequently elected chairman. Mr. I L. C. Todd was selected secretary. After Mr. Pickett had stated the object of the meeting -Mr. Farnham made a short address in which he explained the plan by which the I road is to be constructed. No défi- ! uite 'proposition was submitted at j this meeting, but Mr. Farnham said that the property holders along the right of way art desired and would be expected to take stock in the en terprise to the amount of $.'5,000 per mile. This, however, is not re quired of any one. In hie remarks Mr. Farnham said that the company he represents can build about three hundred miles a year and they were looking for an opening for a large mileage. He said he did not know of a field anywhere where the future promised so much as the black land belt of Texas. He said it was the purpose of his company .to construct and air line from Denison to Waco, building a single track at first and later on to lay a double track. The Pnion Traction people now have on hand about IS,000 tons of steel rails, sixty feet long and weighing seven ty-five pounds to the foot, which they propose using in the construc tion of the road. Mr. Farnham said that the foundries of the East were behind with order· and that st»>nl could not now be bought and delivered within twelve months. A right of way one hundred feet wide, h»* staid, was desired. He said that a» a rule little trouble whs experi enced in obtaining a right of way when the land-holders were made to see the many benefits to be derived from the road. Mr. Farnham ex plained that the land along inter urban roads in the North could not be bought for les» than $100 per acre. He said that for the benefit and accommodation of farmers «purs would be put in every half mile which would hold from two to six cars. Cars can be set in on these spurs any hour in the day on a few hours notice. The roiling stock of the road will con sist, of freight, express, mail and passenger cars. There will be two kinds of passenger cars. One an ex press car which will make a trip every two hours, stopping only at the larger towns. This car will make one mile a minute. The sec ond kind will be local cars which will make stops at every half mile station. Electric lines cannot be compared to steam railroads. The coaches are not divided into compart ments for white and colored passen gers, but one car Is used exclusive ly for smokers and colored. An other advantage is that passengers will not l>e bothered with dust, smoke and cinders. The cars are sixty feet long and will weigh more than coaches used on steam roads. The cars are built like Pullman sleepers and each costs $12,000, in cluding a $6,(i00 motor. Mr. Farn ham said that three preliminary surveys would probablv be made through this county, the work of establishing the grades to be com menced in about three weeks. Sur veyors will begin work on the north end of the proposed line next week. It will cost about 920,000 per mile to construct a single track and about $10,000 per mile to add the double track. At the conclusion of Mr. Farn ham's remarks the following execu tive committee was appointed: T.J. Cole, T. A.Ferris. J. F. Strickland, M. B. Templeton, J. S. Davis, R. W. Getzendaner, E. P. Hawkins, Oece Goodwin, J. Hous ton Miller and G. C. Groce. On motion the above committee was authorized to add the names of five farmers. The following were appointed : Jno. Solon, Jno. M. Harrison, Wm. Hosford, J. T. Johnston and Wm. Stroud. At (he Auditorium. One of the best attractions seen here for some time was the perform ance given last night at the park auditorium by the Curtiss Comedy Company. Mr. Curtiss has been playing in Texas for several sea sons in succession and the company now under his direction is one of the best that ever came to the state. Mr. Curtiss has greatly strengthen ed his company thie season by en gaging Mr. \V. H. Hartigan, a young English actor, to take the leading roles. Mr. Hartigan has met with eminent success <>n the stage, both in Europe and on this side of the Atlantic. His work last night in the very difficult dual role of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde stamps him as an histri onic artist. His work in this play was a faithful portrayal of the above two characters, his transformation from one into the other being done quite cleverly. Mr. Hartigan was ably supported by a strong cast. A new feature with Mr. Curtiss' com pany is the specialty work of the l'ickerte, a company of vaudeville artists of superior ability. Mr. Cur tiss is arranging to return here Oct. 27 for an entire week. ·*τλτκ ok < >rii'·. < ivï ok Toledo, ; Uh comm. ' Κ Κα s κ .)
