Kaboar lira work a ipMtalty, AN APPEAL FOR OUR SCHOOLS Board of Trustees Urge Passage of Bond Proposition. To Τ Η Κ ClTIZKNH (IK W Λ X A H ACHIK : Η avtng been selected by your suffrage as trustees of the tdu cational interests of the city, we deem it not out of place to appeai to your sober judgment upon a question that materially concerns the welfare and efficiency of our Public schools. Tomorrow you are going to have an opportunity to vote upon the proposition of a bond issue for school building purposes, and the result of that election will determine to a great extent what the public schools of Waxahachie will be for years to come. The time has come in the history of our schools when it is ab solutely necessary that something be done to relieve the crowded conditions. Something more than a year ago, the last room in the building, the janitor's room, was fitted up and has been used as a regular school room ever since. We cannot possibly arrange for more rooms with our present buildings. What is to be done? With the opening of another session, boys and girls will necessarily have to be turned away unless additional accommodations are se cured. It would be a sad commentary upon our public spirit and especially upon our healthy educational interest for it to be pub lished abroad that chiidr»"ii wcr·· 'κίιικ ?>>r admission at the door of our public schools and had to be denied for the reason that there were not sufficient accommodations. We are face to face with a proposition that must be met or the children of Waxahac hie will have to suffer. We do not believe that any argument is needed to convince you that our accomm idations are wholly inadequate to the de mand* made upon them. This is universally admitted. However, w«> wish to cite one Instance to confirm this beyond ar. ν reasonable doubt. There have been enrolled in the first grade this year about 115 children. At each of several desks in this room three children are seated. A part or the year two teachers have been compelled to occupy this room. Think, for one moment, of the "onfusioii that would necessarily exist where such conditions obtain. With additional facilities all this could be easily corrected. A great deal more could be said along the line of crowded conditions but the one instance related above ought to lie enough to convince the most skeptical. Not only is the Park building taxed to th.- ins:, but, it might be added, a part of it is regarded as unsa λ»·> ι ! rl be in deed a sad day for our people should this buildii., 'all ini . ruins of its own age and bury beneath the heap thr>>e . four hundred of our boys and girls. More than one architect declare that the build ing is absolutely unsafe. We are all proud of the public schools and the work they are doing aud desire to exert ourselves to the utmost to increase their efficiency aud usefulness. Our schools now occupy an enviable position among the graded schools of the state, and we cannot for a moment think of taking a step backward. Let the school facil ities of our city be in keeping with the financial, intellectual and moral standing of our people. We should be satisfied with nothing but the best. Believing that this Is a time when every friend aud patron of the public schools should rally to their support, aud provide for them those accommodations and equipment* so much needed, we urge upon every tax-payer of Waxahachie a fair and impartial consideration of the question at issue, and, having an abiding confidence in the wisdom and loresi^ht of our people, we feel con fident that when the result is declared the future of our schools will be assured. In voting this tax w<· sincerely believe that we are voting that for which our jiosterity will rise up and call us blessed. Respectfully submitted, T. J. CutJC. C. W. OlHUoN, J.J. McQl'ATfEKH, J. L.
