At the exercises dedicating the main building of Trinity University Jadge T. H. Conner, chief Justice of the court of eJvil appeals at Fort Worth delivered the dedictory ad dress. There were numerous re sponses by representatives of the different classes, beginning with the class of 1S71, previously selected. N. J. Wade, attorney-at-law of Meridian, representing the class of ! 18$.}, responded as follows: My mail often brings me sur prises, but the greatest surprise of ; all was a letter received a few wcpk- ago from k,r>-sid<*nt Kirkes, : informing me that I had been se-1 lected to represent my class on this ! occasion. Absorbed In eelflhh pur-! suits during tiie past eighteen years, I had forgotten that after all I was ; but a child on*· of the great family of Trinity University. Trie most; inspiring sight in this world is the love-making between a mother and f her offspring. How natural does j the little one entwine its arms about the maternal neck, and without one. word expresses its affection bv its ; acts. Ho it istiiat 1 come here toact,· rather thau talk. If the class of ) L885 can fret closest to tbe heart of I our Alma Mater, we are willing! that the other classes may make ail the eloquent speeches, a* they are ; doing. My brothers and sisters of! other classes aret«> be borne with in thfir efforts, for if there is any- j thinii that will iinkf a child of Trinity University talk eloquently,! if he talks at all, it is this occasion. ! Words are too formal and w eak of j themselves, end the class of 1S.S5 will not stop »h<>rt of the maternal embrace. It is for Trinity I'niver- ! sity to command, and it is ours t<> i There is nothing of intrinsic value ' exee; t character. It i·» as inalien able a* the life which it adorns. It ι* tl ·· I)lv ine blending of virtue and intelligence. An intellectual man , without virtue, is lik«· the whited sepulcher <>t w! ich Jesus spoki It itt lmp«rative that education in, as well a· out of our collie*, t>e con-, 'ducted with special reference to morals. An infidel unconsciously eulogised Christian educatioi in these forceful words: "Colleges for I the mont part are places where ! pebbles are polished and dtainond· are dimmed.'' Christian education I makes such results impossible be | cause it makes virtue in character, j j the chief object of educatiou. The j I popular conception of the office j work of a school in the formation of I character, seems to be erroneously, I ! that it has to do only with that con- ; stituent of character called intelli gence. Intelligence is actively and rightly cultivated, but with refer- i ence to morals the tendency of our secular schools is too often passive, j The eternal war between virtue and vice was never fiercer than to- j day. Each Is superbly equipped with Intelligence. Rome did not, ' perish for lack of intelligence, but it was tor lack of virtue. Heaven itself will pass away before history ■ records a case of national extinc tion for lack of Intelligence where ! virtue abounds. In this govern- ! ment the question of intelligence has long since passed the problem- i atic sta^re Our chief concern is to promote virtue in the private aud public lives of our citizenship. And this must be done chiefly by our homes and schools. The nature of the questiou which eugaK^d Cal- . houn, (.'lay and Webster w>-re main ly such as demanded intefligeuce While the deli and lor intelligence is as great as ever, our present day problems, more than ever, are ad ! dressed to public and private virtue I This is demonstrated by reference 1 to the agitation between capital and j labor, aud the question of ι ' .ro social equality, wiiirn at" ■*.!<»ιΐι«-βιι■ problems addressing themselves not so much to the head as to the heart of our patriotic citizensM| . Wi can (tee our greatest danget, inter nal. Intelligence in the drunkard'* gutter» iu the gau.tiler's hell, in th« anarchist's council, in the unlawful combine. For these things could not exist, were they not the result», of educated vice, cultivated intel lects without virtue, polished p*t bles, dimmed diamonds. Home one has truthfully said that "a little learning is a dangerous thing." Correctly understood thi* means that meutal culture to the »e«I «et of moral training, be it ever I so great is "little" fttll. Such learn ing marks its victim, sooner or later for the prison or the asylum. That *q)ioo1 is nearest the correct stan Jard which is the most closely af filiated with the Heaven ordained institution called home. Man makes Ihe former but God made the latter. \ home that is not a school btiild •r, and a school that is not ι home tjuiider, are alike breeders of social parasites. Thirty-four years ago our honored Kathers of the Cumberland Presby terian church in Texas founded Trinity University. They did eo upon the distinctive idea, not only >f the co-education of the eexes, Sut co-educiition of the mind and tieart as w.*ll. Trinity University Is not an industrial school, with ref erence to science and art. Hut with reference to morals, site is in both her curriculum and discipline, an industrial school of high rank. An industrial school trains the l.aud to serve the mind, as it shoald: hut ; Trinity University believes that the hand is the servant of the heart rather than the intellect. Slie be lieves that the end of a truly suc cessful life in tills world can best be reached by preparing for the bejfin uiug of the next, for the two coin· cide. 'lj.ib is proven by her roll call in Heaven. We dedicate this noble but not in distructibie building to the service of our Alma Mater. While today in Heaven another service is iu progress, participated in by her of ficers, faculty and students, whose finished labors are Trinity I'niver sity's noblest monumeut. Our sainted fathers and brothers dedi cate better than we, for the}· dedi cate "a building of God, an house not made witb hands, eternal and in the Heavens." Memory makes our loyalty to our Alma Mater eternal. "for her my tears shall fall. For her my prayers ascend, To her nfy cares and toils be given, Till toils and cares shall end. Movinf to Dalits.
