Jt'HT a little more rain, Mr. Weather Clerk. Tax or no tax, Ellis county is en titled to and must have better roads. Whkn it comes to entertaining visitors Waxahachie knows iust what to do and how to do it. Quay at the head of the republican national committee will cause a re vival of interest in "plum tree shak ing." J The mossbacks in Waxaliachie we growing beautifully less all the lime. The progress microbe is ioing deadly and effective work on ;hat class. Too many embezzlere attribute :heir shortage to careless book keeping. Strange that this care lessness is never observed until the ?ash turns up short. The retirement of Senator Hanria from the chairmanship of the re publican national committee will largely tend to remove that t<entle [Ti a 11 from political power, but the selection of Mr. Quay as his suc cessor will not add to the moral at mosphere about republican head quarters. Distinction for Ennis Boy. Gen. R. Harvey, son of Mr. J. C. Harvey of the Ennis country, has recently been appointed assistant attorney general for the Philippine iovernment. George Harvey was reared on a farm near Ennis. He attended the public schools and the State I'Diversity, studied law and was admitted to practice. Some ten pears ago he located in El Paso and In 1898,was elected county attorney >f El Paso county. Some eighteen months ago with his wife and chil Iren tie went to Manila, $>el»evh)g lis opportunities there-would be setter than in Texas and this early recognition Of his ability and worth general government is grati-1 lying to his many friends. Fort Worth Defeated. The second f^ame between Waxa-1 liachie and hort Worth arrrateurbase l>ail teams was played yesterday af-1 ternoon at Sims park. The game was j snappy and full of vim and some j good playing was seen on both sides. I The features were the pitching of Burleson for Waxaliachie and Burke's batting and Fa^an's base running for Fort Worth. The liann resulted in a victory for Waxa liachie, the score standing: Waxa liachie Fort Worth Batteries ] For Waxaliachie, Burleson and I L'onnor. For Fort Worth, Quick- j enstedt and Redfora. Since the closing of the schools, and the departure of so many bright faces, Milterd seems to be dangling in the dures* of dullness. Dr. H. C. Evans and family are now in Rt. Louit,. Hie family will spend the summer there, but he will soon re turn to this state to take up work in the interest of the school. The road tax election Saturday excited but little interest here, there being only votes cast—2"J for, and Γιίί against. The sentiment against the tax here was the outgrowth of the gross mismanagement of funds in this community last year. The party, or parties, in charge of the road wo, k here at that time simply squandered the county's money, and did nothing, comparatively. When the matter «>f road building has been put upon » rationally or ganized basis, and into the hands of competent parties, we will gladly pay our mite. We want more roads and better ones, but we prefer to pay for the services of financiers urU engineers, because we believe good roads can be had no other way at reasonable cost, if indeed at all. The crop outlook offers encourage ment, harvesting is the order of the day. Wheat an J oats better than expected. Mrs. C. M. Weekly entertained last Thursday, introducing Mrs. Black, tier mother, and Miss Sewell, both of McGregor. Refreshments were served. Rev. Mr. Davenport, a Cumber land Presbyterian minister and for merly a resident ol this county, but now of Williamson county, is here entertaining a call to the pastorate of the C. P. church, at this place. Hope he may become the shepherd of the flock of his faith here. in our last communication wt< came out a little the worse for wear hy reason of a change in one para graph made by the editor, the prin ter, the devil or some other smart Alec. We said: "The rejent rains had saturated the earth and a few days of the thermal capacity of an ordinary June would thaw into smiles the puniest optimist on the crop outlook," and it readthe "stal wart pessimist. ' Look ont now. we will tilt you hard nest time you do that way. New Church at Ennis. The cornerstone of St. Johns Κ·> hemiaii Catholic church, soon to In built at Eunis, wan laid Monday evening with imposing ceremonies, in the presence of a large congre gation. Right Kev. K. J.
