MADE HIS MINI) A BLANK. I Hour in Man's Brain Kept Him in Coina Seven Weeks. i After lying in the Swedish hospi tal, Brooklyn, in a state of coma for seven weeks, physicians having giv en up hope of saving hi· life, Charles Mahoney of 243 Seventh street, Brooklyn, who received a fracture of the skull in a trolley car accident eight weeks ago, has been restored to mental and physical health by an operation which involved the remov al of a broken bone pressing against his brain. Although Dr. William L. Chap- j man, who performed the operation, ! and the superintendent of the Swe- ί dish hospital refused last night to j discuss the case in any way, it was J learned that the operation has been the subject of much interest to phy sicians. While a passenger on a trolley car early in September. Mahoney was | thrown to the pavement and landed j on his head. At the Swedish hospital it was found that the top of his | skull, just back of the forehead, had been crushed in. For seven weeks his mind was a blank As the patient's bodily health re mained good an operation was decid ed upon. This consisted of trepan ning the skull where the bone had been splintered, and removing the pressure which was bearing on the cells of the brain. Dr. Chapman cut away the splinters and lifted the load from the brain. When the patient was revived af ter the operation he appeared be wildered. and his first question was to ask how he came to be in the hos pital.—New York Herald. Strange Animal Kills ( ats.
