BY THE YEAR M00
It wont hurt to remind you
again that a good way to build up
your home town is to spend 3our
money at home
Tin farmer tax dodger seems
to be giving the other fellow a
chance to prove it on him And
the other fellow has a job
Early to bed and early to
rise work like a nigger and ad
vertise is the way a Colorado
paper puts the old saw Not very
eloquent but soundly true
Thomas Lawson will speak in
Kansas on July fourth When
Lawson and Kansas get together
on the Fourth there will be no
need of additional fire works
With the building of good
roads the securing of the head
quarters of the Texas tobacco in
dustry Palestine has enough to
keep her busy all the summer
Disarm the man with the gun
and you will go a long way toward
stQppipgl lHpggtnTexttef Tgry
tew men go home and get a gun
to do the killing with It is the
hip pocket gun that gets in its
work
The Herald has no kick to
make these days Its field of use
fulness seems to be growing stead
ily and the public and business
men are treating it very nicely
We honestly believe this is a good
old town
When asked about the contest
for governor Colonel Tom Camp
bell says Iregard Palestine as
the best town in Texas for the
location of the Pythian Home
Col Campbell is diplomatic and
knows the game Dallas Times
Herald
Governor Laniiam has vetoed
the bill providing for the erection
of a home for the wives of dis
abled exConfederate soldiers
Yet that Confederate speech of
Governor Lanham the one with
whiskers on it will sound as
sweet as ever at this summers re
union Dallas Times Herald
Following the tragedy at
Hempstead on Monday night a
great deal is being said again
about the pistol toter He should
be suppressed but there i hardly
any likelihood that he will be
Our lawmakers seem to have no
terror of the man with the gun
He will pass in time but the time
should be now
At Galveston a mutiny occurred
among the crew of the Crusier
Galveston and some fortyfive
men deserted Thats the danger
of biinging sea men to so fair a
port as Galveston They cannot
stand the thought of leaving it
again None the less the boys
have been arrested and are now
in serious trouble The deserters
claim cruel ticalment caused the
mutiny
Purify the blood and put the syBtom
ill order for summer work by using at
this time a short course of Prickly Ash
Bittern It is the greatest blood purifier
on earth

Dear Herald Easter has come
and gone and while the predicted
freeze did not come yet the rain
that fell last night and this morn
ing will be almost as detrimental
to the farmers who were already
badly behind with their work
As intimated in last weeks let
ter Mr A M Carrol died on
Tuesday last and was laid to
rest at Olivebranch cemetery on
Wednesday Rev L B Elrod of
Itusk assisted by Rev I F Pace
and Rev It R Morrow conducted
the funeral services at the grave
Mr Carroll was 75 years old and
he had resided in this part of Tex
as for more than 50 years taking
an active part in the upbuilding
of thechurches and schools with
which this county now abounds
To the wife and children of our
departed friend we extend our
heartfelt sympathy and ask them
to remember that the gift of God
is eternal life through Jesus
Christ our Lord
This will be enough to say on
this line as lam afraid it will give
the Alder Branch correspondent
a case of the rabbies It does
seem that poor old Grecnie and
Fagin are always getting into
trouble with the cdicatcd gen
tlemen not knowing it until wc
are in mortal combat or classed
off withthe IIoilcBtot
men etc I must acknowledge
that I do not understand what the
fellow is driving at Grecnie may
know as he lived down there some
years ago I take it for granted
that if Grecnie and I should write
more than he thought was proper
he would notify us from the office
Old Grandma Whitfield is still
living and at times she is able to
sit up Charley Elrod was quite
sick last week but is better now
Aside from the whooping cough
which is in every family not im
mune there is not much sick
ness
Rev Pat Vermillion of Jack
sonville came over and preached
Saturday and Sunday last and he
has accepted the call of the church
here to preach for them Some
years ago he preached and taught
school here and is well liked and
has many warm friends here He
is a man of considerable ability
and will no doubt add much
strength to the church at this
place
The Methodist Sunday school
at this place will have a childrens
day service 011 the third Sunday
in May
Miss Eva Williams daughter of
W S Williams who lives in the
Price neighborhood has entered
school here this week
Elder McCay who for some

Poyner died at Jacksonville some
two weeks ago He was buried at

caniG in contact and had spent
his life in preaching the gospel
The writer had the good for
tune to be present at the good
roads meeting at Palestine on
Friday and in the a in Saturday
and was well pleased with what
lie saw and heard It is to be
hoped that this question shall be
mooted until some good roads arc
effected To have good roads we
must have money and how this
money is to he raised is the ques
tion No one calls in question
the fact tlmr we need good roads
