STILL GROWING
HE NOW HAS MORE THAN THIR
TYONE PER CENT OF THE POP
ULAR VOTE FOR GOVERNOR
Todays Galveston News says
The returns Uiat the News prints
this morning added to those hereto
fore published with due revision ac
count for a total vote of 227397 which
in all probability Is more than two
thirds of the whole vote casL From
thirtysix counties these returns are
complete while from a larger number
of counties there is lacking only the
returns In some Instances of one or
two boxes to make them complete
The counties from which the returns
are complete are as a rule the smal
ler ones
Of this total vote of 227397 the sev
eral candidates for governor give the
following
Campbell 71193 Brooks 55954
Colquitt 5027C Bell 49934
It will be seen that Mr Campbells
vote is slightly more than 31 per cenL
of the whole that of Judge Bell a lit
tle less than 22 per cent that of Judge
Brooks slightly less than 23 per cent
while Mr Colquitts vote Is a little
more than 22 per cent of the whole
The returns which tho News print
ed yesterday showed that Mr Camp
hell had received a little more than
30 per cent of the total vote account
ed for at that time so that the re
turns received yesterday indicate a
slight gain It will be also observed
that whereas Mr Colquitt was only
about 3000 votes behind Judge Brooks
In the returns printed yesterday he is
by this mornings returns more than
5000 behind him Judge Bell ad
vanced In the returns rccolved yester
day and he Is now within about 300
votes of Mr Colquitt Of course it
will be remarked that tho contest is
wonderfully close only 6000 votes
neparattag the lastthree candidates
The Records Summary
Fort Worth Texas July 31 The
Record this morning says Returns
last night have made no definite
change in the situation as to any of
the state candidates Campbell leads
for governor Brooks and Colquitt are
running close for second place with
a probability that Bell will show bet
ter In the finals than at first and that
he may even close for second place
Bell has gained more than any other
candidate since the first returns were
received though ho has not yet
gained enough to change the position
first Indicated
The popular vote Is as unreliable In
this race as in a presidential election
Each countys convention vote Is
based upon its vote for governor In
the last state election A county that
voted heavy for governor two years
ago may have voted comparatively
light In the primaries last Saturday
and vice versa
When a contest is at all close the
result cannot be known until the re
turns are all In verified and figured
Into the pro rate as required by law
and It is altogether likely that com
plete returns will not be known until
formally qamassed by the county con
ventions next Saturday
The Records additional returns last
night show gains for Brooks and Bell
but Campbell maintains his distinct
lead
For treasurer Sparks Is so far ahead
that his nomination may be conceded
For land commissioner Terrell is
far ahead
For justice of the court of criminal
appeals Hendersons lead over John
cannot be overcome
For lieutenant governor Hills poj >
ularvote is 58CC2 Davidsons 51770
For railroad commissioner Williams
